Companies are already using undue courtesy towards LLMs manipulatively, people are getting emotionally involved with tragic results, and no matter now nice you are treating them as if they were human dehumanizes actual humans

TP is just the most abused inanimate object I could think of, and yeah it’s not mean, it’s just how it’s used

If LLMs required verbal abuse to achieve their objective, that’d just be how their used, if you say that’s immoral, you’re already conflating LLMs and people and you’ve got bigger problems

You’re not being mean to a tool if what you do is required to achieve the desired effect, or else we couldn’t use toilet paper

There’s no ethical way to use a tool that you can’t distinguish from a person

If how you treat a tool interferes with how you treat people, you need to not use the tool

Yeah, I am extremely wary of any emotional engagement with LLMs, it’s absurd and, again, naive

Saying there is a right vs wrong way to emotionally engage with LLMs is like arguing about how to play with toys, going Toy Story Sid on them is obvsly bad, but adults anthropomorphizing them, also hmmmmm

You could fail at keeping separate how you treat real people and LLMs, maybe, and that’s a reason to not use them, but intentionally conflating them accepts some ugly compromises, you’re sacrificing security and humanity because it’s building different sets of habits for people and LLMs is hard

You have to treat LLMs as a person to use them, it’s the interface

They are not people, they are tools

How do you resolve that conflict? Either you try to keep them distinct, or intentionally conflate them in your habit forming
