Tilt: A Prayer for the Winter Solstice

The earth tilts away from the sun

WE MUST PRAY AND WE MUST DO: A Prayer for Lighting Candles

We give thanks for the ones who offer prayers.
We give thanks for the ones who take action.
We cannot heal the world without both,
We must pray AND we must do……

PRAYER FOR WHEN IT’S ALL TOO MUCH

Well the news is horrible.
It’s too much pain, too much hate.
No wonder we’re angry,
No wonder we’re bewildered.
Cruel idiots are ruining the world
And it’s exhausting
And weird
And we can’t stand it.
It’s too much………

AS WE PRAY

Blessed Oneness!
If they come at us
As we pray:

We pray and place ourselves in front of the fear,
We pray and we place ourselves in front of the anger,
We pray and place ourselves in front of the grief…….

PRAYER TO THOSE LIGHTING CANDLES

Happy Hanukkah!
Blessed be the Maccabees who keep watch!
The ones who blow whistles,
The ones who swarm the bullies and
Stand in front of their cars,
The ones who video the atrocities
And the ones who know right from wrong…

THIS IS THE RITUAL, Hanukkah version

This is the Ritual: Lighting the candles on Hanukkah
I loved Hanukkah when I was young:
Eight days of presents, what’s not to like?
But then I grew up.
I lived alone.
Who was I lighting the candles for, not me…

IN PRAISE OF THE DARK

Light candles, as one does, but consider this:

Over many millions of years
Organisms evolved
To thrive in the dark,
Eyes big and reflective,
Taking in the main chance.
Mysterious only to those who slept
While they flourished…

I’M DONE WITH THE MACCABEES

Blessed One-ness,
Ruach HaOlam:

I'm over the Maccabees.
I'm done with fanatics.
I'm done with extremists who demand purity.
I'm done with fundamentalists who shut women up.
I'm done with religions that kill.

BELOVED OF THE SOUL

Compassionate Oneness,

Imagine us all,
Everyone,
Sweet as honey,
Kind and loving.

Radiant with life,
Pure at the start.
Then we forget and yearn
For pleasant safety….

PRAYER FOR THE YOUNG AND THE OLD

It is our current inclination to despair:
For the young
It is maddening to be left with a future
Of environmental degradation
And fascist cults.
And for the old….

A PRAYER FOR DEMOCRACY

Blessed Holy Wholeness,

The Powers That Be
May be
In power
For now.

But we are the powers
that were
and are
and will be.
Amen

I like to vote on Election Day. My mother was a member of the League of Women Voters, one of the few ways women could be part of the political process in the fifties and early sixties. She took us into the voting booth & let me yank the handle that registered your vote. I miss that yank.

Trump’s latest target? The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, one of America’s last truly wild places. His administration just announced plans to open it up for oil and gas drilling, turning 1.56 million acres of pristine wilderness (home to polar bears, caribou, and migratory birds)

Hey, I don’t tell you who to vote for for Mayor where you live, don’t be telling me who to vote for where I live. NYC will decide for itself. And we are not inclined to vote for a corrupt sexual abuser endorsed by Donald Trump, Eric Adams, billionaires and real estate interests.

There is a full-on push in NYC right now to use "Mamdani doesn't make Jews 'feel safe'" as a cudgel to get Cuomo into office, and it is utterly disgusting. You know what makes me feel unsafe? People who casually characterize us as a trembling single-issue monolith scared of the big bad Muslim.
