It gives me much pleasure to be able to announce that, on my suggestion, the Working Group on Small Body Nomenclature (WGSBN) of the IAU announced yesterday the naming of asteroid:

(732272) Langejans

...after TU Delft scientist Geeske Langejans.

If you’re in the Preston area and fancy talking palaeo-parenting or primate placenta, well aren’t you in luck ;) come to this totally free talk at the University of Lancashire, kick off at 17:40 on October 8th www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/growing-up...
Growing Up Human
This talk will look at the incredible evolutionary story of how humans came to spend quite so much of our time playing around.

So gdm angry about this. And not just a little scared. They have new ways to silence scientists now
brennawalks.bsky.social
Like science? Then you better be interested when *someone* starts putting out hit pieces on scientists. This is beyond the pale ethically and honestly anyone who doesn’t want to slide to hell on a slick of ai generated content that benefits billionaire business, maybe now is the time to get angry.

Happy #PublicationDay to @gregjenner.bsky.social @rikinparekh.bsky.social and… me! This has been the most fun I have ever had writing a book, hands down — exactly the way archaeology ought to be ;) (otherwise I’d get a real job, wouldn’t I) www.walker.co.uk/978152952249...

Due to a non-serious yet unignorable Health Thing, I'm unable to go to Musée d'Archéologie Nationale in Paris this week for our first #ExcavatingGarrod 🗃️ archive trip.
Amidst 😭 at missing out, I'll hopefully also share tidbits on what @toriherridge.bsky.social & Emma Pomeroy find there!

Early doors for me today as I whizz off to Paris on the Eurostar in search of treasures hidden in the archive of Dorothy Garrod.

Garrod was a major hub in the networks of women archaeologists who pioneered the palaeolithic (and beyond), and I cannot wait to see what we will find

In honour of #ExcavatingGarrod I’m resurrecting a @trowelblazers.bsky.social post from 2014 and asking you all: What’s Your Garrod Number?

If we are being strict mine is actually 5:

Garrod>Bate>Mary Leakey>Maeve Leakey>Eleanor Weston>me!

Networks matter!

If I'd been able to go (😭), Tori, Emma & I would be channeling this exact #trowelblazers vibe right now: L - Germaine Henri-Martin, R - Dorothy Garrod, C - Suzanne de Saint-Mathurin (from whose archive this photo comes, & within which Garrod's archive was found, only in the 1990s!)

They're in a richly furnished apartment with a huge bookshelf behind them and paintings in gilded frames on the wall. From the Saint-Mathurin archive, Musée d'Archéologie Nationale, Paris. Speaking from serious experience, Diaz-Andrew w controversial opinion: things have changed in how we talk about women in archaeology since first session 1993- contra the @brennawalks.bsky.social opinion that nothing much has gotten better since 2015;)
