I like Internet security and privacy, Chicago housing and politics, math rock and shred jazz, and cool gifs
It’s terrible that city council is collectively debating how to fill the budget gap without sliding into junk bond status, while alders are individually chasing away new property tax (and possibly new tax payers)

That’s not the most tragic part of denying new housing, but it is the most ironic
alderpersons declined to support these developments in 2025, effectively killing them:

1. Quarry House, Pilsen, 16 homes
2. 5500 W Devon, Edgebrook, 48 homes
3. 7728 N Sheridan, Rogers Park, 52 homes

There's a 57-home proposal in the 36th Ward, but I think that one is still being negotiated.

I’m half way through Enshittification and
1. It’s very good, and
2. It makes me super respect and appreciate Lina Khan’s time at the FTC (this isn’t a overt part of the book)
3. It makes me split despair/hopeful…

that Snowden thread bummed me out

It’s worrying that folks on the left celebrate secret, unchecked, govt (and military) power

I think it’s bc crypto folks talk decentralization, and crypto has become right coded. And so any checks on govt power read right-coded

this is bad and wrong!

This is shameful.

I don’t know if Snowden was a Russian asset anymore than you do, but what he did was brave and good.

He documented pervasive unchecked surveillance and govt power, and is a huge reason the web is (mostly) encrypted and we have even the (tatters of ) privacy we do on the web
this is getting some traction on the other place, but might as well bring it over here
