I’m looking forward to having read them all and then circling back to The Italian and Udolpho, seeing what I think of them all in relation to each other. And very much looking forward to your expertise! 🖤

So am I! Really looking forward to spending proper time on Radcliffe. Reading A Sicilian Romance right now 🖤

Ruby by Rosa Guy (1991) springs to mind although not sure if it has a HEA - haven’t read it in a long time

Oh yes I see. I find he doesn’t really provide solutions, much more true to life in that way, things go on and people just muddle through. Will check out the MLQ essay, thank you

What’s the other one you’ve read?
January 22, 2026 at 9:34 AM
I liked The Odd Women a lot, and The Nether-World too. The honeymoon of Pennyloaf and Bob was heartbreaking. I find his writing generally compelling but The Whirlpool I found misogynistic and pointless - odd that is it still in print compared to his many others.

I needed to read this today, thank you Alicia. 🖤

Yes I’ve noticed the same both in teaching and in my own studies. The tragedy is even women leading the module etc do this stuff.
I also have to say, whoever didn’t hire you for that particular module was clearly out of their mind.

Unbelievable

I guess if it’s it something youve thought about 🤷🏻‍♀️ trying to be generous here. The lack of attention to Aphra Behn does rile me though, and that is within the academy too tbf

(Strangled cry) Northanger Abbey tho!!!! You are SO right on this 🤬
January 21, 2026 at 12:27 PM
I swear to god the whole world outside the academy thinks the entire nineteenth century is Austen / Brontë / Dickens, with Dracula and Frankenstein thrown in. Pls for the love of god

I don’t have any evidence to back this up but I really agree that is the general perception. I really would like to see Burney much more in the public’s awareness. It’s like, you all love Austen so much! You would like Burney who influenced her, I promise

Haywood’s works are hot. Read a few at undergrad and never forgotten the raunch 🖤 also like your point about the Austen influence on perception …

Can I suggest going to London or Bath?
January 15, 2026 at 2:32 PM
I’ll look forward to it when the time comes then
January 9, 2026 at 10:38 AM
Any idea when these might be coming out? I’d love to have the collected works 🖤
January 9, 2026 at 10:07 AM
Planning to sign up for your course! But need to work out a few things first to see if I’ll be available etc 🖤
January 6, 2026 at 8:05 PM
Funnily enough one of my 2026 resolutions was to finish reading all her novels. I’ve read Udolpho and The Italian of course but it’s just embarrassing I call myself a Gothic scholar and haven’t read them all. Reading The Romance of the Forest right now 🖤
