For as much conversation about the hamfisted references as there are, the reason for their existence is quite funny, it is almost entirely because custom and altered menus are just so fucked up they had to put in placeholder or filler screens just to make things work at all ;(

I personally adore the end result even if it's a little shaky. They've already stated there's going to be hotfix updates and likely little tweaks to address feedback and concerns alongside stability, but yeah it is amazing they got this all working with just base mod loader stuff.

These features will likely be available when its ported to decomp or the separate engine, whichever happens first. Mod loader limitations prevent one or both of these I think, sadly.

But like damn even by Vergil 3 I was in Royal Guard for a lot of that fight, parrying Dimension Slash FEELS cinematic and cool as fuck, the intensity it adds is worth the struggle

Yeah I think if I had any feedback for myself back then it ould have been to wait to get it to level 2, I think the air parry makes it far more malleable for the kinds of high speed decision making the game asks of you without it feeling automated

It was at least very funny. "T please just do Trickster or Swordmaster" "No. Thirty minute Vergil fight"

It may have gotten me called VERY stubborn but learning to do all of Vergil 1 with Royal Guard was sooooo fun. It kinda comes and goes in waves with my mood though, I find.

And despite the prevalence and sheer quality of online play in FGs lately (it has improved tenfold), I still think these things are vital for just....long term interest. The games on their own played in isolation just aren't enough IMO

I also think access to the social aspect (beyond just Discord) and geographical luck of the draw (do you have good mentors in your area, someone that's good at teaching concepts) play such a huge factor in FGs. Essentially, luck.

There's a lot of factors for certain. Deckbuilders in particular are offshoots of card games which humans have been playing forever, but I also think fighting games as a genre rely on a far more personalized measuring stick for progress and that just doesn't work for lots of folks as quickly.

I exist in this really funny gradient where I've played a number of notable platformers and fall into like a Nintendo kid trend until people learned I never played Metroid PRime until like 4 years ago LOL
