Every traffic fatality is uniquely tragic with deep loss for friends, families, and communities

We have tried to tell their stories and encourage leaders to step up

Anyone who wants help doing this in their own city can DM us for advice

We call on @cityofoakland.bsky.social elected leaders like @charleneforoakland.bsky.social, OPD, OFD, and OakDOT to treat our city's traffic safety crisis as a public safety crisis and accelerate efforts to make our streets safe for everyone to use at all times of the day

According to neighbors it used to be safe enough for kids to play in the middle of these streets, but now even crossing one risks their life

If planned traffic calming for E 16th like 4-way stops, traffic circles, and speed cushions had been added already then they could have saved a life on Friday

Neighbors told us they have witnessed multiple collisions, at this intersection, mainly drivers speeding down E 16th

They are desperate for 4-way stop signs and crosswalks here like on rest of E 16th St, along with speed bumps and traffic circles

They will accept anything the city is willing to do

We are saddened and outraged that yet another life has been tragically taken due to traffic violence

21 people have been needlessly killed on the streets of Oakland just this year and we are trending to 29 by the end of the year, only 1 less than last year

These injuries and deaths are preventable

Neighbors shared video of a white Ford SUV speeding about 50mph eastbound on E 16th St

Cyclist tried to avoid the collision by swerving ahead of the car but failed to predict the speed

The car hit him with such significant force it threw him on top of another car that had slowed for him to cross

Residents told us multiple people have been hit by left turning cars here

Broadway is on the High Injury Network and an upcoming project addresses many safety issues, but 8th needs a dedicated walk cycle and pedestrian median islands on both sides of the street

We are saddened and outraged that yet another life has been tragically taken due to traffic violence

19 people have been needlessly killed on the streets of Oakland just this year, with untold numbers of others whose lives have been irreparably harmed

These injuries and deaths are preventable.

Upper Telegraph is getting bike lanes in 2028, but that is still a ways off:

OakDOT is enhancing connectivity and safety on Telegraph Avenue from 52nd Street to Woolsey Street as part of Oakland’s Five-year Paving Plan.

This is a very scary intersection, and what is even more scary is 52nd/Shattuck doesn't even make the top 20 most dangerous intersections in Oakland :(

We have a lot of work to do

oaklandside.org/2024/06/18/w...
Where are Oakland’s 20 most dangerous intersections?
From Bancroft and Seminary to Perkins and Grand, these crossroads see the highest nmbers of deadly car crashes and injuries.

We have heard from one direct witness so far who reported details different than this police report, but regardless of the exact situation there is no safe way for a cyclist to cross this intersection.

Yes, 55th and Shattuck was our first vigil 😢

Good point. This is more properly 52nd and Shattuck.

The labeling of this intersection is as confusing as crossing it.
August 21, 2025 at 9:28 PM
There is currently no safe way for a cyclist to cross this high volume and high speed intersection
