In 2024 Oakland implemented a 4 car lane to 1 car lane road diet on 13th St in Downtown using only paint. It’s not perfect but this relatively cheap change has helped a lot w speeding.

The perpendicular Webster corridor is the same width & needs a similar update ASAP.

We call on @cityofoakland.bsky.social's elected leaders like D2 @charleneforoakland.bsky.social, OPD, OFD, and OakDOT to treat our city's traffic safety crisis as a public safety crisis and accelerate efforts to make our streets safe for everyone to use at all times of the day

Protected intersections like 14th St, diagonal parking like 13th St, and corner bulb-outs like 12th St could have slowed the driver to a safe speed

But most importantly OakDOT must add the required 20ft of daylighting immediately before anyone else is killed here!

Half of Chinatown's streets are on the High Injury Network, including Webster. It is just a matter of time before someone is killed

Drivers use these wide multi-land roads to speed, and a painted bike lane is not sufficient protection from cars traveling this fast

We spoke to workers at Tay Ho who told us witnesses rushed into their restaurant that day to borrow towels to help the cyclist until the ambulance arrived

He was 1 of the 23 people who were needlessly killed on the streets of Oakland in 2025

These injuries and deaths are preventable

Last December a driver hit and injured a 65 year old man while he was biking in Chinatown

We just learned he passed away from his injuries

Our hearts go out to our neighbor whose life was cut short and we extend our sympathies to his family and friends

The mayor says something really important about something that's bugged me for a long time: that we force grieving families to relive their trauma over and over again as they lobby elected officials asking them to do the right thing. I am so glad to hear him say those days are over.

Thanks El Cerrito/Richmond Annex Walk & Roll for holding a powerful vigil yesterday for Donna Revecho, who was killed while crossing San Pablo Ave.

It was inspiring to join dozens to stand up for safe streets.

We need to hold Caltrans accountable to make San Pablo safer & prevent more tragedies!

The plastic posts and speed cushions installed on International Blvd successfully reduced pedestrian deaths to zero by discouraging speeding in the bus-only lanes

This intervention saved many of our neighbors lives this year and will continue to save lives into the future

Now make it permanent

If pedestrian deaths can be eliminated on the previously deadly International Boulevard, we should be able to eliminate them on every other street.

We just need the will to do it, especially from policymakers and Caltrans.

Thanks @tvrr.bsky.social for tireless advocacy to achieve this huge win!

Massive congratulations are owed to the folks at @tvrr.bsky.social for their work on International Boulevard.

It is *unquestionable* that their advocacy has saved multiple lives, something not many people can say.

Quick 🧵on their blog post.

According to neighbors it used to be safe enough for kids to play in the middle of these streets, but now even crossing one risks their life

If planned traffic calming for E 16th like 4-way stops, traffic circles, and speed cushions had been added already then they could have saved a life on Friday

Neighbors told us they have witnessed multiple collisions, at this intersection, mainly drivers speeding down E 16th

They are desperate for 4-way stop signs and crosswalks here like on rest of E 16th St, along with speed bumps and traffic circles

They will accept anything the city is willing to do

We are saddened and outraged that yet another life has been tragically taken due to traffic violence

21 people have been needlessly killed on the streets of Oakland just this year and we are trending to 29 by the end of the year, only 1 less than last year

These injuries and deaths are preventable

Neighbors shared video of a white Ford SUV speeding about 50mph eastbound on E 16th St

Cyclist tried to avoid the collision by swerving ahead of the car but failed to predict the speed

The car hit him with such significant force it threw him on top of another car that had slowed for him to cross

“The price paid for these chases is too often paid by community members and bystanders like Dr. Marvin Boomer. We should focus on solutions and interventions that create safer streets through street transformation, not by making our streets battlegrounds.”

Residents told us multiple people have been hit by left turning cars here

Broadway is on the High Injury Network and an upcoming project addresses many safety issues, but 8th needs a dedicated walk cycle and pedestrian median islands on both sides of the street
