One of their worlds got eaten by the Tyranids for lunch

So of course they called it "Prandium" (Latin term for the Romans' midday meal)

(The in-universe justification for the name is a little less silly, where "Ultramar" is supposed to mean "beyond the sea [of stars]" or similar, but I would bet real money that the Ultrasmurfs' color scheme is the Doylist explanation for their name)

Who would have known that a guy named Angron would have anger problems

Or that Corvus Corax would go on to lead the Raven Guard

"But what planet are they from?"

"From...Ultra...mar...i--wait no. Ultramar."

"Yeah, that's it."

So this is basically like streaming for videogames, or doujins for anime/manga, but for Disney IPs? I.e. encouraging users to commit what's technically copyright violations in exchange for a cheap way to keep interest in an IP?

Side note, what is it about philosophy bachelors doing well career-wise? Does a bachelor in philosophy equip its graduates unusually well for the work force, or do philosophy bachelors tend to be well connected either before or during college?

Out of curiosity, what sorts of fields of study do you think do not produce much value and should be reduced?

As Max Miller of Tasting History would say: never play a game of Chaturanga with Krishna when rice is on the line
December 10, 2025 at 4:34 PM
I think it's this, yeah. The people who think the incident was a war crime/morally evil view soldiers who retreat as if they're in those scenes from war movies, where the soldier is fleeing because he's completely and utterly broken, in total panic, a danger to no one except maybe himself

bsky.app/profile/loui... Louis's explanation here makes a lot of sense
I think this is probably a composition effect: to a first approximation you have to be ~50th percentile right-wing to be a white GOP voter, or perhaps even 40th, whereas you have to be like 90th percentile right wing to be a Black GOP voter

Between this and the Nagash trailer for Total Warhammer, this kinda feels like a "break glass in case of emergency" moment for Creative Assembly. Especially with their recent non-warhammer entries not doing well and the Warhammer playerbase getting frustrated

wait so this isnt even a "who are the evil colonizers and who aren't" map, this is just a "who hurt Argentina's fee fees" map

I'm not even mad, just disappointed

One of my favorite places in Philadelphia is a Hispanic restaurant apparently owned by a Chinese lady, so if you wish you can get a chorizo burrito with a side of Chinese pork soup dumplings

I wish we could build one but I have no idea where to even begin. Where did our previous apparatuses of public virtue come from, how was it built, and how was it destroyed? Could those methods be replicated today, or will we need a new solution to our current problem?

Now I'm curious as to whether the Trump administration is secular enough to spawn a hardline religious reaction against its corruption and cruelty

"Your honor, this piece of writing should not be protected by the First Amendment"

"Why, is it porn?"

"No, because it's written like complete ass. Just read it"

"Oh god you're right"

Or perhaps that those peoples' center-gripped shields worked well enough in shield-wall formations due to their size or construction, while still permitting good performance in more fluid engagements?
November 29, 2025 at 4:32 PM
Center-gripped shields were preferred. At the same time, those peoples seem to have been renown for fighting in shield walls.

Does your point suggest that those peoples might not have fought in shield walls as commonly as they are thought? (cont.)

Thank you for these awesome articles, as always!

Question in re the point on "aspis-style shields being more suited for shield-wall style formations than center grip shields": my layman's understanding of early medieval Scandinavian and Anglo-Saxon warfare is that (cont.)

Walmart be cheap
November 26, 2025 at 4:27 PM
Because "Walmart+ including fees, subscription, etc. is still cheaper than other grocery stores due to sheer grocery price disparity between Walmart and other places" sounds entirely plausible
November 26, 2025 at 4:27 PM
I know you did the math on this already for yourself, but I'm actually curious as to how the numbers work out for folks in your area and position in re using Walmart+ vs getting groceries yourself
