The Biblical beliefs here aren't fringe. As I talk about in Holding It Together, many conservative White Evangelical moms believe God calls them to physically discipline their kids, and that if kids don't "act right", it's because their parents didn't do that.

It's an easy jump from there to here.

This was really common during the gay marriage debate - a lot of Democratic politicians who took tactical anti-gay-marriage positions would get accused of supporting it and this wound up spending their time on tv strenuously arguing against other liberals' position. Rhetorical disaster!

A really old trick conservatives use is to accuse liberals of supporting an idea that would make sense under liberal values but that liberals don't actually support for tactical reasons. So you face a choice of either accepting the false accusation or you argue against your own values.
