a dog and a cat lay across the back of a couch, against the windows, to watch the world. Their bodies are positioned facing one another with overlapping front paws, as they are brothers and best friends - but their faces and eyes are turned towards the camera (that's me!). Sam's dog DNA identifies him as a pomeranian-chihuahua-maltese-cockerspaniel-shih tzu-pug, so he is a perfectly cat-sized dog. Sam's base coat is white and has large brown patches. His expressive face is further highlighted by coloring that emphasizes his eyes and ears. His mood ring ears are askew here, with a slight droop to his left ear, indicating his usual comfort, and his kind eyes indicate that this pose may result in the serving of teearreeeayyytees . Henry Rex, our cat-king, has a brown tabby cloak and mask, with white socks, ascot and muzzle [not pictured: a tiny tabby chinstrap]. His green eyes are wide and his ears at a perfect vertical. It would seem he also is expecting something. Their gaze also appears affectionate, though that may be only the photographer's bias. Sam the dog and Henry the cat huddle together indoors, peering through a glass patio door foggy with condensation. Against the outside of the door, a small kitten lying on the ground is looking back at them inside. It is June in Houston and there was (sic) a heat advisory, so the cool glass and escaped air conditioning make this doorway spot advantageous for a kitten's survival. Clever kitten. The indoor animals appear quite curious as to why this baby is in the dangerous outdoors without a person. A silver and white tuxedo kitten in a small shipping box in the bathroom on a rug, with an empty water bottle for size (no bananas). The kitten is larger than the empty bottle, but not by much. The freshly abducted kitten appears quite cross, his face and eyes are squinted and pulled tight, showing stress. Ceilings and walls (not pictured) are so very alien, and the sounds of an air conditioner blowing and water running are quite deafening. The three pound baby was finally nabbed after some days of trying to catch him while also making sure he had food and water available outside. All the days of eluding capture, the would-be kidnapper asked herself if yet another companion was really a defensible choice, yet she could hear him silently chirping "let your conscience be your guide" no matter where her prey hid. The tiny baby staggered and panted in the heat, and still he had the audacity to vigorously flee many attempts to trap him. Somewhere in all those failed attempts, the kidnapper realized that their fates were already intertwined and the choice had already been made. In this picture you can see the kitten's angst, that all his efforts were for naught, and he is definitely inside... for what might be forever... One year later. Two cats now pose along the back of the couch, Henry Rex sitting on his window-throne at right, and foundling Cricket O'Malley strewn lazily and horizontally at his left. On the seat of the couch lies Sam the Dog, carefully watching kitten Cricket above him. Sam has now learned kittens are unpredictable and can roughhouse in a way that is not always comfortable for a little dog, even though no serious arguments or even minor injuries have ever occurred. One just never knows. Henry Rex gazes over his cloaked shoulder, past his brothers, and at the camera (me!), as if to ask "aren't we enough? surely this couch is holding all the souls that it can bear?". Henry's silent question proves his divine authority.
