With The War Within wrapping up and Midnight around the corner, I'd like to take this opportunity to once again take stock of my roster of World of Warcraft characters and pontificate on whom I'll be playing next expansion. Mind you, historically I almost always end up diverging from my plans on what I'll be playing, but it can still be amusing to look back and see how off I was.

Ever since Efflo broke up, I've periodically tried to find out if Sadye Cage, their singer with the incredibly unique voice, has returned to music. I never found anything, and I'd pretty much given up hope, but through means he cannot explain, my father recently stumbled across her YouTube page, where she's apparently been uploading music for about two years now.

Time for another recap of what I've been playing lately. New World I played a bit more of New World, though I am starting to wind down. With most of my goals completed and no content on the horizon, I imagine it will become like The Secret World: a game I'll always love but only revisit every now and then.

I recently took a week or so break from New World to catch up on some more Age of Empires II content, and no sooner had I finished that than Microsoft dumped a whole bunch of news about the crazy amount of content coming to the franchise in 2026. Let's start with my DLC catch up. Mainly my goal was to play through the recent Chronicles: Alexander the Great.

My gaming time in November was almost entirely taken up by New World and Overwatch. Contrary to how many have reacted, the knowledge that it might all go away soon lit a fire under me to dive deep into New World in a way I haven't in at least a year. I've now got all my gear sets for both max level characters more or less "finished." Not full best in slot per se, but at least full "good enough in slot." I could -- and very well may -- still do more upgrading with umbrals.

A few weeks ago, I played the demo for Tides of Tomorrow, the upcoming game from the team behind Road 96. Enjoyed it, will likely buy the full version at launch. That got me nostalgic over Road 96, so I went back to see what I'd said about it on the blog, and I found... nothing. I may not be as diligent about updating this blog as I used to be, and I know some stuff has fallen through the cracks, but this feels like an egregious oversight.

Another RPG project I contributed to has made it to crowdfunding. The Olan Taa worldbook is now live on Kickstarter and as of this writing is already within striking distance of its funding goal. Olan Taa is the setting used by several previously crowdfunded tabletop games like Skytear, Skytear: Horde, and Onward. It is a shattered world full of surreal landscapes and magical technology, warred over by four ruthless human cultures.

I was never quite sure what to think about the Lord of the Rings anime film War of the Rohirrim. With lukewarm reviews, I waffled on whether to bother seeing it in the theatre, and by the time I finally decided to, it had already ended its theatrical run. Now, though, I've finally gotten around to watching it on streaming.

By now, you will have heard the news, and I've already posted lengthy thoughts on the matter at Massively Overpowered, but I felt like I should say something here, as well. I feel a vague sense of regret that almost all of my writing on New World has been on a site someone else owns. Of course, there are good reasons for that.

When I quit WoW at the end of Legion, I wrote a fairly self-indulgent fan fic to say goodbye to my warlock/demon hunter. Since my unexpected return to the game, I've been thinking I needed to do another fic to explain her return to the adventuring life. It took me longer than expected, but with Midnight looming and all eyes on the Blood Elves, now felt like the right time.

After the many faceplants of Age of Mythology: Retold, I wasn't feeling terribly enthusiastic about the Japanese-themed Heavenly Spear expansion, but I was pleasantly surprised. It's not perfect, but it's a definite step up in quality. Most notably, the campaign is a much better experience than Immortal Pillars' disappointing effort. Most every major point of criticism seems to have been at least somewhat addressed.

Now that this segment is increasingly turning into a "what I've been playing" series rather than a grab bag of mixed personal anecdotes and industry news, I kind of wish I'd chosen a different title, but I feel like I need to keep the tradition alive. Anyway, September was another month where I bounced around between a lot of different things.
