We’re calling all our UC colleagues to show up on Tuesday at 2pm at the William J Rutter Center at UCSF (1675 Owens St., SF), where the Regents will be meeting to discuss the Trump "demand letter," for a rally to express our support for academic freedom, public education, and healthcare for all.

On Friday August 8, the Trump administration demanded a $1 billion “settlement” from UCLA after freezing $584 million in federal grants for vital scientific and health research. The proposed $1 billion agreement would be the largest settlement since Trump began extorting universities, and marks the first attempt of the federal government to ransom payment from a public university. These attacks have been waged under the guise of fighting antisemitism and investigating alleged Title VII violations, but we see them for what they are: an attempt to cripple public higher education in the nation’s premier public university system.

A UC-AFT Local 1474 advocacy graphic with a blue and yellow design featuring a megaphone icon. The text reads 'Stand Strong Against Attacks on Education - HOLD THE LINE!' followed by 'Tell Pres. Milliken and the Regents to refuse any concessions demanded by Trump's Dept. of Justice and to stabilize funding for research and teaching at UC!' The graphic includes the UC-AFT logo with California state outline and directs viewers to take action at linktr.ee/ucaft.

Another new interim policy that will go into effect Fall 2025:

Faculty may be disciplined for extramural speech when the “university’s interests” outweigh the “employee’s expressive interests.”

We must resist these blatant attempts to criminalize and chill faculty free speech!

On June 23, the Regents’ Workgroup on Faculty Discipline Policies and Procedures released Interim Policies. Some will go into effect Fall 2025 without review, including:

Coordination of discipline with UC Police Departments for all misconduct cases, including those regarding expressive activities.

The Gov says his May revise reduces the 8.95% cut to UC to a 3% cut, still plans to defer the compact funding 1 year (a $240 million cut to UC in 2025-26). UC's May funding should be up 5.95% relative to January's proposal, but somehow it shows a $16 million cut: ebudget.ca.gov/budget/2025-...

We recognize the importance of securing data, but UCOP has completely bungled President Drake's cybersecurity mandate, leaving many important faculty questions unanswered. We must now call on UC to postpone this mandate. Faculty can join us in making this call at: sites.google.com/view/delay-m...

This morning, FACULTY UNIONS led by @aaup.bsky.social sued the Trump administration over the unlawful funding cuts at Columbia. We will not let the federal government use coercion to rob us of academic freedom and critical research!

So proud of my union!

If the block on the Federal Register isn’t removed in the next few months, I fear a majority of labs will close within a year. This small procedural wrench has the power to kill US science indefinitely, losing an entire generation of discovery and innovation.

I had two grant proposals up for review in the NIH Bacterial Virulence (BV) study section. It was canceled without notice this morning.
Without those grants, my lab must close within a year.
And so the purge of scientific research in the US continues
