After another fairly hot and dry spell across California, cooler and more active weather will once again return later this week as remnant moisture from then-former #HurricanePriscilla interacts with an offshore low pressure system. [1/3] #CAwx #CAfire
Map plot snapshot from ECMWF model depicting the offshore low (NorCal) and the weakening Hurricane Priscilla (west of Baja CA). The field plotted is mid-level moisture (blues represent moister air) and mid-level winds.

One point to reinforce in this story: no one disagrees that improperly pruned shrubby plants, aka “poodling” (trimming the outside into globes, spires, and squares) leads to massively dead plant interiors, making them more fire susceptible.

Uncertainty in the science on plant combustibility is throwing a curveball at California’s effort to require an “ember-resistant” perimeter around homes.

A cool Bluesky feature: If you take a screenshot of text with your phone and want to add alt-text, you can copy the text right there in the ALT window. It’s OCR’d for you.

It doesn’t work on web, but works great on the iPhone. No need to go back to the article you’re reading to copy from there.
Screenshot of an alt-text window with the highlighted text: A recent surge in California fire activity, punctuated by a large blaze that erupted outside of San Francisco on Saturday, has officials wondering if this year's fire season could be worse than expected. The forecast is complicated, however, by a mix of competing factors both increasing and decreasing the fire risk.
