Survivors of the 1 September 2025 earthquake in Afghanistan have correctly assessed that rainfall-triggered landslides are much more likely in the aftermath of the mainshock. This illustrates how landslides extend the impact of an earthquake in time and space.

On 21 July 2025, an extremely large rock avalanche occurred in the mountains in Wanrong Township in Hualien County, Taiwan. Initial measurements suggest that this ran out for about 6 kilometres.

These are fascinating debris flows that've been occurring for years. They mobilize from pyrite-rich fractured quartz latite that acidifies groundwater and chemically weakens the rock in place (I measured pH 4.7 years ago). Then, a big storm + gravity = this. ⚒️ 🧵

A new paper (Kharismalatri, Gomi & Sidle 2025) in the journal Natural Hazards uses the concepts of the inflow angle and the channel gradient to examine the behaviour of large landslides after failure. It show that those two measurements predict the behaviour of most slopes.
