"We regret the decision to cut the aid budget at a time when needs are escalating, but the aid which remains really needs to be better focused on fragile and conflict-affected states like those at the top of our Emergency Watchlist."

Palestinians in Gaza need a major surge in aid as winter conditions set in.

IRC teams report that rains have already flooded makeshift shelters, leaving thousands exposed to wind and cold temperatures.

Last winter, the UN reported children and infants dying from hypothermia in displacement camps.

"It should be sacrosanct that you aren't sent back to danger. The countries with the most people crossing the Channel are Sudan & Afghanistan. There's a well-founded fear of torture if you're sent back to those countries."

David Miliband discusses the UK asylum policy announcement on @news.sky.com:

"We should play our fair share in solving the world's problems because if we don't, those problems will come to us... that's actually the way that we build our own security and our own prosperity."

"It's wrong to say that the choice is between compassion and order. It must be right that a smart [asylum] system treats people humanely, follows international and domestic law and ensures that there's order to the system."

David Miliband speaks to @andrewmarr.bsky.social on @lbc.co.uk:

"Those who've made it out are a small minority and they're bringing tales of horror with them. After a siege of 18 months that left people starving, we've now got testimony of killing on a large scale."

At least 170 unaccompanied children have been registered in Tawila after fleeing violence in El Fasher, Sudan.

"It's terrifying that so many children have made the journey without their parents. It leaves us asking: have they been killed? Where are they?"

"What's happening right now in El Fasher is hell on earth. It has been besieged for 6-9 months. People are starving, people are thirsty… We're hearing atrocious stories of people being detained, being killed.”

As a months-long blockade by armed groups is finally lifted, the IRC is responding to huge needs in Léré, northern Mali.

Food insecurity driven by the restrictions was exacerbated by severe flooding last year. The IRC is currently the only NGO operating in the area.

"No matter how fast the aid operation scales up, there are people we won't be able to reach, and that only makes it all the more urgent that the uncertainty about the details of the plan are resolved quickly."

"We're really pleased to see that this agreement did include this this scale up of aid and this surge in humanitarian assistance going into Gaza alongside the hostage release. What we haven't seen yet on the ground is the scale that's needed."

"It's important to underscore this is just a first step in the humanitarian surge that's needed. What we have to see over the coming days and weeks is a steady and sustained increase in the level of humanitarian aid being provided."

After over two years of Israeli bombardment, the situation on the ground in Gaza is absolutely devastating.

90% of the population is displaced. Nearly every single person in Gaza is in need of humanitarian assistance.

This cannot be allowed to go on any longer.

"One of my colleagues told me that the air is full of not just drones and fighting and bombardment but the sound of children crying because they are hungry... There's worse to come unless the borders are opened and aid allowed in."

A reminder: No one chooses to be a refugee, but we can choose how to respond.

As tensions in the UK rise and misinformation about people seeking safety spreads, it's more important than ever to keep showing up for those at risk in our communities.

The UK government’s plans to restrict family reunion could leave families separated by thousands of miles.

This is one of the only safe, regular routes available for many people. Restricting it risks pushing people into dangerous journeys. We urge the government protect this lifeline for families.
