"We regret the decision to cut the aid budget at a time when needs are escalating, but the aid which remains really needs to be better focused on fragile and conflict-affected states like those at the top of our Emergency Watchlist."

"It should be sacrosanct that you aren't sent back to danger. The countries with the most people crossing the Channel are Sudan & Afghanistan. There's a well-founded fear of torture if you're sent back to those countries."

"We should play our fair share in solving the world's problems because if we don't, those problems will come to us... that's actually the way that we build our own security and our own prosperity."

"It's wrong to say that the choice is between compassion and order. It must be right that a smart [asylum] system treats people humanely, follows international and domestic law and ensures that there's order to the system."

"Those who've made it out are a small minority and they're bringing tales of horror with them. After a siege of 18 months that left people starving, we've now got testimony of killing on a large scale."

"No matter how fast the aid operation scales up, there are people we won't be able to reach, and that only makes it all the more urgent that the uncertainty about the details of the plan are resolved quickly."

"We're really pleased to see that this agreement did include this this scale up of aid and this surge in humanitarian assistance going into Gaza alongside the hostage release. What we haven't seen yet on the ground is the scale that's needed."

"It's important to underscore this is just a first step in the humanitarian surge that's needed. What we have to see over the coming days and weeks is a steady and sustained increase in the level of humanitarian aid being provided."
