After Gwen died and Peter was devastated Mary Jane wanted to help and he was mean and said she wouldn't care even if her own mother died. Despite that, Mary Jane decided to stay and help him.

And seeing the conflicts they dealt with while married, only made them seem more real and in the end they always came out more committed to each other. MJ was in Peter's life almost from the begging, when their aunts tried to hook them up.

They both helped each other grow and push past their pain, both loved each other completely but neither of them immediately accepted both Peter and Spider-man from the onset like she did.
