Before zebra crossings were invented, other mammal-based crossing ideas were trialled. The inflatable giraffe crossing certainly aided visibility but never really caught on

“The Antediluvians recognize an old acquaintance”

This cartoon appeared in Punch magazine, 27/07/1861 - linking the old age of our Dino friends with the previous appearances of the “Great Comet of 1861”

The comet is now designated C/1861 J1, and is due to return in 2267 so…see you then, yeah??
Black and white cartoon. The Crystal Palace Hylaeosaurus, on the edge of the lake, is looking up through a brass-looking telescope mounted on a curvaceous tripod on the back. Behind it, a Teleosaurus is holding a telescope, and the standing Iguanodon is looking up in the distance. Their focus is on a comet, heavily stylised with a grinning face. The caption reads: “The Age of the Comet ascertained to a Nicety. The Antediluvians Recognise an Old Acquaintance of A.M. 1372.”

“Do not all these beings who preceded man and who are emerging from their tombs today seem like monsters?

Yet they are connected to us by original bonds”

Translated from “Le monde avant la création de l'homme” (The world before the creation of humankind), by Camille Flammarion. Art by Georges Devy
Black and white book illustrations. Various antediluvian reptiles (and glyptodonts), many of them Crystal Palace-inspired, are emerging from a cave directly toward the viewer

Also: yes, this is a rather good one
Sheela on the tower of the Church of St. Mary and St. Andrew, Whittlesford, Cambridgeshire. Description from link below: Uniquely this figure is joined by a crouching phallic male figure which form the window arch ... The sheela figure itself has a deeply incised vaginal cavity which she holds open with one hand the other hand seems to be disappearing behind the leg of the male figure. One finger points to the clitoral area and there appears to be a slight suggestion of the clitoris at the top of the vagina. Both legs are held apart and the there appears to be a suggestion of breasts. In the arguments over whether sheelas are sexual or apotropaic in nature this figure is often cited as evidence in favour of the sexual theory. It is hard to see anything other than a sexual meaning to this carving with the erect penis of the male figure and open vulva of the female. The elongated body of the male figure suggests a monstrous nature and so seems to add weight to the argument that this carving at least, is a warning against the sin of lust.

This bizarre 'nostalgia' towards things that never existed by petty tyrants and fascists was already there before AI came and gave expression to their picture-thinking. Here is Paolo Virno from 2002:

In search of some peace, Edvard Munch settled in the small town of Kragerø on the southern coast of his native Norway in 1909. The move sparked his interest in landscape painting and stimulated his development of a bright palette and energetic, sweeping brushwork.
