🐶 Taking a photo with your pet? Not a modern concept!

🐾 Today's #OnlineArtExchange theme is 'animals', so here's a selection of three paintings from our collection with the most adorable dogs!

#UlsterMuseum #Art #Portraiture #Dogs #Puppies @artukdotorg.bsky.social
A woman in fancy 18th century clothing cradles a white dog in her arm. He appears to be snoozing. A young boy poses for a portrait in clothes that indicate he is intended to portray a poor beggar. He stands with one arm around his dog, holding his paw in his other hand as if making his dog wave to the viewer. A family in 19th century clothing pose for a portrait in their study. A young child reaches for a small black and white dog to give him a pat on the head.

This picture of a little girl wearing a new pair of shoes is decidedly sentimental, in the manner of much Victorian anecdotal painting.

'Marine Group' was our first purchase of Danish glass and is extremely significant to our collection, as Denmark, like Ireland, was one of the early glassmaking regions in Europe.

These astonishing pieces on display in 'Art of the Possible' were crafted by Steffen Dam, a glass artist from Denmark. Dam’s inspiration comes from the natural world, particularly marine & plant life.

'Marine Group' (2019) echoes the specimen jars held in the our Natural Sciences spirit collection.

It's #AugustCraftMonth!

'Bird' (2018) by Bruce Marks is on display in 'Art of the Possible'.

With 'Bird', Marks has stripped back the form of a bird to its essentials, where it retains its undeniable bird-like quality. The bright red opening of the glass sculpture mimics the gaping beak of a bird.
A vase-like glass sculpture of blue-green with a bright red opening coming to a peak, resembling a bird's open beak.

This week's #OnlineArtExchange theme is abstract art, and who else to feature but #MainieJellett?

Born in Dublin, she studied at the Metropolitan School of Art and Westminster School of Art in London, later moving to Paris. By 1923 she was painting in a completely abstract, Cubist-inspired style.
A multicoloured abstract painting, showing a focal point in the centre with twists and turns of shapes emanating outward. The colours change at intersecting arcs and corneres, with blues, yellows, reds, greens, oranges and purples, all fairly dark in hue.

The series’ name is a reference to a group of known, or suspected to be, gay politicians who warned the British Government of the growing persecution of minorities in 1930s Germany. Chamberlain referred to them as 'The Glamour Boys', intending to use their sexuality to insult them.

Happy #Pride, Belfast!
To celebrate, we want to share 'Fear', 'The Shame' and 'Chaps' from the series 'The Glamour Boys' (2024) by Simon Dredge.

A circular ceramic, split in half. One half has text reading “here comes the shame”; the other reads “all he cares about it love”. On the left, the out rim reads “be careful”, with the right reading “they’re watching you”. The disc is decorated in plaid patterns. An orange circular ceramic with the words “fear eats the soul”. A circular ceramic with a pin triangle decorating the middle. In the triangle are the words “but we bring the fun!” The triangle hides text, which we can just discern reads “those…chaps”. The three ceramics mounted on a wall together.

Sleator's skills as a portraitist are evident. Along with his attention to detail regarding his costume and surroundings, his expression is deeply emotive in both paintings.
A detail shot of a self portrait. The man's expression is calm, thoughtful, and almost somber; his eyes seem to water slightly.

🤳 This week's theme for @artukdotorg.bsky.social's #OnlineArtExchange is 'self portraits'!

'Self Portrait' (1945-49), by James Sinton Sleator, is just one of many self portraits the artist painted; Armagh County Museum hold this painting, also titled 'Self Portrait', in their collection.

This week's #OnlineArtExchange theme is summer ☀

🕶 Northern Ireland is finally warming up in time for the long weekend. For many of us, that means an afternoon lounging in Ormeau Park.

🎨 'Horseshoe Flower Bed in Ormeau Park, Belfast' (c.1910) by Hans Iten, captures the lovely scenes ahead of us.
A painting of a park. The grass and the trees are a lush green, while flowerbeds are vibrant blues and reds. The sky is a cool blue, with shades of yellow giving a sense of a warm day.

👃 Today's #OnlineArtExchange theme is 'smells in art' for ‘Scented Visions' at the Watts Gallery.

🌸 'Still Life' by Georges Jeannin overflows with sensory information. You can almost smell the bright bouquet and the slightly acrid odor of the spilt vase water.

A still life painting of a vase of flowers tipped on its side. The bouquet is large and bright, spilling off the edge of the canvas.
