It's looking hopeful for enough ice to walk on a little bit this year.

All of this ice was probably destroyed by the strong waves that came with that blizzard.
There are some small waves crashing against a broken sheet of ice on the shore of lake Michigan. A person wearing a red coat is a small dot in the distance. A large piece of ice broken off the ice shelf has a texture similar to a biscuit with layers and pockets. The lake and sky are white. The edge of lake Michigan is frozen with large piles of ice and sand. A large chunk of brownish ice stands in the small crashing waves.

A fallen tree is covered in green lichen and the wood is wet from rain. The sky is filled with gray overcast clouds with some subtle shades of clouds in the distance and the lake has turned dark in color. The sky and the lake are a mix of dark and light colors and the shore is a mix of ice and snow and sand. The jagged sandy ice forms an interesting contrast to the bright water behind it.

The mix of soft rain and gentle breezes was nice
Looking down a ridge of ice along the shore. The sky is white and the water is silver. A large piece of ice has broken off the leading edge of the ice sheet and is resting on the wet sand. A lagoon of water protected from the waves by a large ice ridge is filled with chunks of ice and snow. The horizon cuts across this picture at a diagonal, and a hole in a pile of ice shows where an ice volcano lies dormant with the lack of waves.

All in all from the passages I read the themes for this year aren't great, but also not the worst I've seen, and you could even make a case for optimism.

I once went on a trip with friends camping across the Great plains and I annoyed one of them by quoting the tao te ching a ton cuz we had taken a religion class together.

Thank you goddesses water, cold, and waves.
A bright gap in the clouds over lake Michigan turns the water pink and red. A thin pier with a small tower cuts through the water before the horizon. There are small chunks of ice floating throughout the water. The rocky edges of the pier are covered in bumpy uneven ice and the water is orange and pink. The sky is mostly filled by dark clouds but there is a gap at the horizon. The icy mouth of the Holland river is beautiful in sunset colors.

I had to go to my car to warm up but I'm glad I stayed for the real sunset.
The lake side of that tower. A thick buildup of ice connects two of the four pillars holding up the tower and the ice's surface as it climbs the tower becomes pitted. The sun peeking through a gap in the clouds turns the Holland River orange. The whole sky has become red and the sliver of water is even brighter. Standing in the parking lot and looking over fences which control blowing snow and sand on the beach in the winter. Closer now to the lighthouse we are still on the shifting sand and hidden snow of the beach. The overcast sky is still underlit by red light.

I totally played up how slippery it was walking on the pier to discourage anyone from following 😂
The sun's light is beautiful reflecting off of the waves on the dark water and the white ice. There is so much bird shit on the end of this pier. There is a small tower with a green stripe and a light on top which has been covered in ice on the right side from water splashed up from the wind and waves. More of the sunset on lake Michigan with icebergs floating out from the river. Some of the icebergs have smaller pieces of ice riding on top. Icebergs on lake Michigan at sunset. A column of the sun's light on the lake's surface reveals gentle waves.

It's moments like these that I wish I had some kinda aquaman powers so I could jump on those icebergs like a surfboard.
The boulders which line the concrete pier have all been covered in countless layers of ice. Looking across the river on the other side shows the same thing. Nearly at the end of the pier ice has overtaken every surface before a small island of concrete with a tower at the end of the pier. Some of the boulders have been washed clean of ice by the waves but others have become fully encased in ice. We have now gotten to the end of the pier and it's back to the corrugated metal walls, the boulders are still there but below the water line. The sun is peeking through a gap in the clouds and shining bright orange light onto the water and ice of lake Michigan. A floating iceberg has holes like Swiss cheese all around the edges from melting. Submerged boulders almost blend in with the floating ice.

Another piece of holiday media I enjoy is better off dead. One year my parents got us some video games for Christmas but wrapped them in microwave dinners boxes 😂
A closer view of Holland's red lighthouse. It is a square building with a short tower and a light on top. Looking down the shore at Holland beach. There is a thick sheet of ice and snow mixed with sand at the water's edge and three people walk down the beach. The edge of the ice juts out over the water which has melted the ice below. A closer look at some of the peninsulas of ice at the edge of the water. Sand blown by the wind onto the ice makes it all look very geologic. The pier at Holland is coated in a thick layer of ice on the side facing the lake but the inner side of the pier only has ice coating the rocky breakwater. The sky is starting to turn orange.

I like to visit one of the local cacti near Christmas ever since I played earthbound a few years ago. It's very charming and it feels like a cozy holiday game to me. And Holland is a great place to do it, just park by the beach and walk to the stairs up Mt Pisgah, look on the left side of the road.

The trees are bare and there is snow melting on the ground with a thick layer of brown leaves which have been pressed flat under the snow. Standing on top of Mt Pisgah, a tall sand dune, this side of the hill facing lake Michigan is covered in dry yellow beach grass. Holland's red lighthouse can be seen below, and there is a sign that says "dune restoration area please stay on boardwalk." The sky is filled with gray clouds but there is an orange streak near the horizon. Another view from Pisgah focusing more on the lake. Light glints off the blue water as the sun struggles to shine through the thick clouds. Near the horizon where the clouds thin there is an orange glow. Sand shows through the patchy beach grass on the dune's gentle curves. Looking down the winding stairs from st Pisgah icy lake macatawa is in the distance. Trees and houses line the shores of this small lake which is connected to lake Michigan by a short channel.

The bark on this apple tree is all kinds of colors
Multiple thick twisting branches on an apple tree. The bark is completely covered in colorful lichen ranging from green to yellow. The thick bark of this tree is encrusted in orange lichen. This small patch of bark is a mix of pale green and yellow and gray. More cracked bark with some patches and specks of orange and yellow.

Are those green wood chips some kind of fungus or is it like, a chemical or something?
A close up of those ball shaped mushrooms. More of those mushrooms growing on old rotting wood in that same area These mushrooms look like they have been chewed on by some small creature like a slug or mouse. Some pieces of broken wood that are a copper green color.
