I genuinely think you could have something here if the act was cleaned up. You can share images too but there's strange client-specific behavior, Psi+'s plugin seems so old its image uploader doesn't even get seen by other clients, though thankfully it does see the images others sent.

Conversations on Android also seems generally quite usable too, at least there I think the situation seems fine. Pidgin is even more barebones than everyone else but I respect the ludicrous amount of supported protocols.

I wonder if WebRTC and related could help? Audio and video are out of scope for something I could try prototyping myself in love2d but I hear that is built exactly for enabling streaming
