A male Chinook dog in a rare moment of stillness. Note the loose loop of the line, indicating the presence of 'restraint', a phenomenon known only to the adult Chinook. This particular example is a tawny-furred boy with darker, red-tinted ruff and a black half-mask muzzle. His eyes are outlined in black and marked with darker eyebrows (no orange eyebrows here). His ears, tan shading to dark, are floppy and pointed forward, listening for anything exciting. His mouth is slightly open, revealing the tip of a dangerously long and dexterous pink tongue. Sunlight gleams through the outstretched wings of a hawk in flight in this autumn afternoon photograph. The hawk is soaring rightward across the image and is photographed from below. This close-up of a yellow flower (possibly evening primrose) was taken in the early morning in late summer. Dewdrops are so closely set on the soft, wide yellow petals of the open flowers that the petals appear to be made of yellow dewdrops. Two flowers on the center and left are in full bloom. On the right, yellow petals peep out from the green covers of three burgeoning buds. The rounded texture of the petal dew stands in contrast with the minute dewdrops highlighting the sharp 'hair' of the buds. Dewdrops hang from short, invisible threads dangling off two of the buds -- either longer hairs, or short snippets of spiderweb. The background is dark and soothing, the mood intimate.

A tangle of dew-bedazzled greenery on an early summer morning. The thin stems of these flowers are lined with tiny hairs, each one now shining with its own catch of dew. The edges of the narrow oval leaves glisten with dewdrops. Here and there, a dewdrop hangs precariously from the curve of a stem, likely to fall at the first rustle of wind. Hints of spiderwebbing, bright with dew, criss-cross the thin stems. All the flowers are shut, waiting for a brighter sunlight to unfurl. In this late summer photo, a large bee clings to the edge of a jewelweed flower. These tiny, trumpet-shaped flowers, orange with darker orange spots and lips, hang from thin stems, suspended from the center of their lengths. The back end of each free-swinging flower terminates in a tiny curl. The stems are reddish with smooth, mid-green leaves. Jewelweed is full of sap, and the stems have a slightly translucent look. The bee's front legs grasp the edge of the central flower. Tiny droplets of dew glisten on flowers and leaves. The bee's fuzzy yellow and black coat also looks slightly damp, as if it has bathed in dew. Light glistens off its legs, echoing the glistening dewdrops. The bee's translucent wings can be glimpsed between two leaves.

Two spiderwebs gleam in the summer sunshine. The webs are stretched between two trees, the left tree dark with moss, the right a white birch. Between dark and light stretch the webs. The larger web, face-on to the camera, glows with captured sunlight. White light shines along each strand of the classic circling spiral. Below, to the right, another web lies almost edge-on to the camera. Its strands shimmer in rainbow hues, barely seen. It is as if the white-shining spiderweb strands were prisms, refracting a trembling rainbow shadow before them.

A line of swallows pause and preen on a wire at a local park. Some, heads twisted, settle their feathers. Others seem to be chatting. Creamy and rosy chests alternate down the line, while dark blue wing feathers fall off in the sharp points that mark the swallow's tail. The sky beyond the birds is the pure, pale blue of early morning. The overall effect is of a line of ballet dancers settling at the barre.

This great blue heron was photographed in mid-flight over a calm lake on a cloudy summer morning. Its long wings are white along its shoulders and down its back, contrasting with the grey-blue primary feathers. The tips of the outermost feathers are bent upward by air resistance from the downbeat. The heron is giving its best pterosaur impression, with its long yellow beak wide open, neck curved, and legs stretched behind. Its yellow feet extending from darker legs show up clearly against the dark lake waters. If you look closely, you can see faint gradations of color from white to a pale grey-blue on the feathers leading down the back toward the bare legs. The calm lake reflects green trees and dark underbrush, against which the heron's rippled reflection shows strongly.

Three daylilies bloom on a single plant. Each down-turned lily spreads six yellow-orange petals in a wide floral curtsey. Red-brown dots accent the edges of some of the leaves. Rich brown stamen can be seen clustered in the center of two of the flowers. These lilies are growing freely in a local nature preserve. The entrance to another trail in the background is indicated only by blackness, mingling with a soft background of dark green growth. The orange lilies stand out with striking clarity against this dark background.

I had a rough week. Then the mail came, containing my copy of Amanda Kastner’s “Cinderella at Midnight”.
It’s a better week now. :D
