"If we lose hope, we're doomed."

We must continue Dr. Jane Goodall's mission and all fight for the future of the planet.

As someone who has been a teacher for 30 years: call the teacher and have a conversation. Teachers are workers too, though we face more public vitriol than most—for too many reasons to list here.

Alberta Teachers’ Association members have voted 89.5 per cent to reject the latest contract offer.

Turnout for the vote was 94 per cent.

51,000 teachers will go on strike across the province on Oct. 6.

Here’s ATA president Jason Schilling announcing the vote result in Edmonton #AbEd #AbLeg

Great fodder for teaching logical fallacies in my senior philosophy class.

I honestly wish I had to go digging rather than have a daily plethora of examples at my fingertips.

Increase in productivity since 1979: 87%

Increase in hourly pay since 1979: 32%

Just so happens that ~25% of workers were unionized in 1979. Today? 10%.

As unions declined, the super-rich have taken a larger share of wealth generated by labor. We must build back union power.

Fantastic analysis of the strike by Air Canada flight attendants. #canlab

"Unpaid work was a central issue in this conflict and a union campaign target for years. Outrageously, flight attendants are mostly not paid for work they do before an airplane closes its doors. Members demanded CUPE address unpaid work in this contract."
Air Canada Flight Attendants Overwhelmingly Reject Wage Proposal
On September 6, flight attendants at Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge rejected a proposed tentative agreement by a resounding 99.1 percent, with nearly 95 percent of bargaining unit members voting. It ...

A few thoughts on the overwhelming tentative agreement rejection at #AirCanada. 🧵 #canlab

1. The union oversold the tentative agreement by declaring the end of unpaid work. That framing seems to have rubbed some members the wrong way.

Two of BC’s public sector unions just went on strike as public servants push back against rising costs of living

Wages that don’t keep pace with inflation and outsourcing contract work are at the centre of two public sector strikes in British Columbia

A solid legal precedent but the expropriation of the expropriators will still have to be unsanctioned.

Ugh, the thought that as of tomorrow we will likely have to listen to this whiny little creep in the media once again after so many months of not having to 😫

Air Canada has been “encouraged by the federal government’s pattern of intervention in labour disputes…there’s a ‘Get Out of Jail Free’ card now, with the use of section 107.”— @stephross.bsky.social

Workers defying back-to-work orders shows growing mistrust of a system stacked against them. Govt bias fuels militancy and pushes unions beyond legal labour action. My comments in @thestar.com #canlab #aircanadastrike #aircanadaflightattendants @cupescfp.bsky.social

Air Canada strike: Union defies back-to-work order.

“This is the natural result of the repeated use of Section 107,” said @stephross.bsky.social. “As soon as workers have some power to actually move their employers, the government steps in.”

Air Canada strike:

“We’re going to stay committed to making sure that those workers can do the job that they love doing and actually be able to afford a roof over their heads, to afford caring for their families,” CUPE president just said.

“If it means folks like me going to jail, then so be it.”
