Old dad, fortunate husband, nonprofit marketeer, jaywalker, viajero, Chicagoan by way of many places.
Not possible to raise multiple kids on $50K. My wife lived in a pop 2,000 Iowa town 3 years. Housing the only real difference compared to Chicago (huge $600 apt vs $900 Chicago studio). Gas, internet way higher. Her “quaint” small town had a Casey’s, bowling alley, a Curves, 3 bars, and this place.

And before you think, “but that’s in Siberia, nobody lives there”

Whenever it gets cold in Chicago, I check in on this place to feel better. The coldest I’ve ever experienced is -12. I can’t comprehend -40.

For every “pedestrian killed/maimed” stat we see, there are 1,000s of near misses. This morning I was one of those. Two east-bound on Montrose drivers blew this light at high-speed, a full two seconds after the light changed. Then a driver turning left/east from Kilbourn floored it, almost hit me.

Everyday I feel like kissing the ground because I’m not raising my kid in a state governed by christofascist assholes.

Got a report card from my son. My morning behavior’s excellent. I’m doing great in science. Terrible at computers. Pretty good at farting.

Carmex may have done some half-assed shoveling, but it’s mostly 125 feet of packed down ice now, 4 days latter. My 311 ticket has no update, will probably get closed out. City leaving money on the table. My 81-year-old neighbor’s sidewalk is clear, but these slobs can’t for kids walking to school.

Having a kid hit home for me how our built environment is designed to rob him of any freedom. Lived and walked in U.S, cities for 35 years and I feel like it’s never been worse. A combo of 1950s design, bloated vehicles, screens, and increasing assholery. A block from his school at drop-off time.

This one’s from a few years back and is my all-time favorite. I had to add a dollar to the swear envelope that day. My son has about $50 in the swear envelope and will tell you it all comes from Daddy yelling at drivers.

Chicago drivers are so profoundly stupid when it comes to blocking intersections, I’m sometimes amazed they can even muster the brain cells required to breathe. Here’s one with a monster truck and my man randomly dropping a “6-7!”

I keep sticking these on a signal control box in my Chicago neighborhood, along a dangerous Illinois DOT controlled road that we have to cross to get to our park. The city keeps painting over the stickers and I keep adding them. Here’s what crossing is like. I have indoctrinated my six-year-old.

I learned to drive on the 1985 Honda Civic my parents replaced the Buick with. It was a great car and I was hard on it. In 1994 it became mine, then I gave it back to my parents ~1998. My dad sold it in 2005 for $1,000. It had 300K miles and was still going strong. Two clutches, three timing belts.

Ah yes, the 70s. My parents had a 1977 Buick LeSabre that chewed through tires because it would never stay in alignment and the A/C broke down repeatedly. It got ~15 MPG. A golden age. In 1985 they replaced it with a Honda Civic.

Although she’s Spanish, my wife was was born in Germany. In the 70s, her parents had to go there to find work. On this 50th anniversary of Franco’s death, EL PAÍS has a great article about how the country has transformed since 1975. Unfortunately it’s paywalled so I can only share screenshots. 1/3

My son’s in 1st grade, LOVES reading and math. Got all A’s! We took him out for ice cream, congratulated him. But he has also grown emotionally (empathy, self-control) so much the past few months. We’ve told him how proud we are. This note from his teacher moved me far more than his report card.
