Hello, new followers! Presumably you know this, or else why would you be following me, but I'm Fred. I natter on about this and that. I work in academic publishing, have edited and published @kaleidotrope.bsky.social for almost 20 years, and very occasionally write short fiction, most recently this:
Fred Coppersmith > Where the Prayers Run Like Weeds Along the Road > Bourbon Penn
You find the dead man waiting for you right where you left him, leaning against the old wooden fence at the side of the road. He looks like he’s smiling, a lopsided grin of too many teeth, but you’re ...

The President of the United States doesn’t seem to know what habeas corpus is
atrupar.com
Q: Have you given any more thought to possibly suspending habeas corpus?

TRUMP: Suspending who?

Q: Habeas corpus

TRUMP: I don't know. I'd rather leave that to Kristi.

☝️Is there a sci-fi movie that you defend tooth and nail, but you feel a little alone in loving it?
When you're sad because you spent three hours defending a movie and clearly you're the only person in the world who likes it.

~pam bondi, US attorney general

My gosh. After the US bombed multiple boats in the middle of the ocean, murdering people on grounds that they were allegedly "carrying drugs," the US Attorney General says "Just like we did with cartels, we're going to take the same approach, President Trump, with Antifa."

Again, there are two possibilities here—Trump knows he’s lying or he believes this obvious lie—and either one should be enough to remove him from office.

It should be a slight comfort that Antifa is a made-up organization that doesn't actually exist, and yet I must admit I don't feel very reassured, maybe because some of the "cartel members" Trump had the military assassinate were reportedly just fishermen

The literal reading of this statement is Pam Bondi is planning extrajudicial executions of random protesters.

"We took freedom of speech away" should be in every campaign ad moving forward.

I asked an algorithm designed to mimic patterns it had learned through the plagiarism of billionaires if it could spit out something that looked convincingly like the stories it had stolen, and it burned through an ocean to deliver whatever this is. Thank you for your consideration.”

The elimination of USAID is a moral atrocity and all involved made a choice to enable, and then lie about, ending the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in the world.
MAE SOT, Thailand (AP) - Mohammed Taher clutched the lifeless body of his 2-year-old son and wept. Ever since his family's food rations stopped arriving at their internment camp in Myanmar in April, the father had watched helplessly as his once-vibrant baby boy weakened, suffering from diarrhea and begging for food.
On May 21, exactly two weeks after Taher's little boy died, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio sat before Congress and declared: "No one has died" because of his government's decision to gut its foreign aid program. Rubio also insisted: "No children are dying on my watch."
That, Taher says, "is a lie."

I think part of why the alarm bells aren't going off harder is that once again Donald John Trump is being treated as unserious and therefore not an actual threat.

I will not back down.

Trump is now calling for the arrest of elected representatives checking his power.

What else is left on the path to full-blown authoritarianism?

So this is funny.
The administration just issued a rule slashing foreign agricultural worker wages. And to justify it, in a public filing, Trump's Labor Department alleges that Trump's immigration enforcement has devastated the Ag workforce and caused a "risk of supply shock-induced food shortages."
Trump Labor Department Says His Immigration Raids Are Causing a Food Crisis
In a filing in the Federal Register, the Labor Department argues there are “immediate dangers to the American food supply” due to a lack of migrant agricultural workers.

The obvious follow-up that no reporter ever seems to ask Johnson is: do you think the country can afford a Speaker of the House who is this fucking uninformed?

Q: Do you agree that the mayor of Chicago and governor of Illinois should be in prison?

MIKE JOHNSON: Should they be in prison? I'm not the attorney general. I'm not following the day to day on that

We’re not dealing with brilliant strategists cleverly laying traps, we’re dealing with impulsive whiners whose advantage is contempt for laws, norms, and morality.

They’re not pulling some elaborate trick, they’re just willing—even eager—to do things regular, principled people consider off limits.
