3. We are thrilled to see Andrea Sartorius emerge as the winner of the Rising Star Award in Policy Impact.

Her work continues to push boundaries in environmental research, with her PhD uncovering risks from trace metal pollutants in food and water beyond mining site.🥳

As part of the Forest exhibition which opens this May at Nottingham Castle, we are supporting a unique collaboration between artist Caroline Locke and four faculties at the University to model the Major Oak tree in Sherwood Forest.

Since 2019, over 450 students in Leicestershire have developed confidence, collaboration, and technical skills through this initiative. She is set to expand this impact to Nottinghamshire in 2025 with Research England Funding. 2/3

Today, we are showcasing Dr Alanna Higgins' current work on the intersection of food insecurity and disability in Nottingham and Glasgow. Her research highlights the systemic barriers disabled individuals face in accessing food—issues often overlooked in policy and academia. 1/2
By collaborating with community members, policymakers, and academics—including an upcoming partnership with the University of Strathclyde—I aim to identify key issues and advocate for policy changes that reflect the lived realities of disabled individuals, with potential national impact.

Dr McCabe's engagement with the Women and Equalities Committee on honour-based abuse has been pivotal, and this new role will further amplify her and the University’s involvement in shaping national policy.
