Houston dreaming over California (he/him)
God, the number of times ChatGPT gets something wrong—confidently so—and when challenged on it, says I did X, Y and Z wrong (mea culpa, mea maxima culpa voice), and what I will do in the future (“and you can rely on this”) is A, B and C. It’s so tiring.

2025 was yet another unusually warm year for the United States – and another year packed with costly disasters, despite the absence of any landfalling U.S. hurricanes.

Fourth warmest year in U.S. history: 2025 » Yale Climate Connections
It was the first year in a decade without a U.S. hurricane landfall - but it still ranked third for billion-dollar disasters.

Department of Justice is one of those gov’t agencies whose name has come to have prime doublespeak vibes under this administration. Likewise Environmental Protection Agency. And Department of Defense. And Department of Health and Human Services. And. And. And. These people all suck.

I spoke to a talented junior scientist who just got a good faculty job offer in the US and they told me “well I wouldn’t move to 1930s Germany either” so that’s how that’s going

How long do you think we’ll keep using cellular networks on our phones—as opposed to undifferentiated network access that can be used for various connection types (including voice) and applications?

California will heal, but our carelessness and indifference with CO2 represents an investment that repays outsized portions misery.

So disheartening to see the extreme rightward turns the country is making to curry favor with the incoming administration. Even if it’s only driven by opportunism, it’s not a good look.

Ready Player One is such a fun book. And the Wil Wheaton narration is perfect.

It’s Sunday, so it’s got to be red beans and rice. I just put it on, and it already smells great in here. Should be set for a week of goodness.

It seems to me that newspapers and magazines would do well to offer a la carte access to articles (w/o abandoning the subscription model) in exchange for a very small fee (I’m thinking cents or even a fraction of one). See a linked article you want to read, authorize payment and read away.
