🎉 Congratulations to #URIGSO Ph.D. candidate Molly Robinson, who has been named a 2025–2026 Schlanger Ocean Drilling Fellow!

Molly's research focuses on nitrogen cycle changes in the southwest Indian Ocean across geologic timescales, studied by analyzing the nitrogen composition of foraminifera.

#URIGSO’s Sophie Yates, Ahyoung Yu, and Laura Reed recently boarded the R/V Tangaroa off the east coast of Gisborne, New Zealand. The team recovered 12 CPIES that had been measuring slow slip events on the fault beneath the seafloor and deployed 4 more for a future project. ⚓🔬

They’re deploying moorings, collecting data on Narragansett Bay, and collaborating on a client-driven coastal pollution scenario to address real-world challenges in applied oceanography.

Stay tuned as they dive deeper into data collection, modeling, & presenting their findings later this semester!

A final homecoming ⚓️🎶💙

Last week, a crowd gathered at the Bay Campus Pier to welcome #RVEndeavor home from its final scientific mission. The celebration marked the retirement of University of Rhode Island's faithful research vessel after 50 years and more than 700 scientific missions. #NSFfunded

In the early 1980s, #RVEndeavor supported a series of cruises led by #URIGSO professor Tom Rossby to study the Gulf Stream. Using an instrument called Pegasus, researchers measured currents from the surface to the seafloor with centimeter-per-second accuracy.

🧪🌊 R/V Endeavor, so central to the @urigso.bsky.social mission, returned home one last time, closing out 49 remarkable years of seagoing research with well-earned cheers for an amazing ship and crew. Is the ship's retirement a hint of broader things to come?

By December 26, Endeavor had launched its maiden science voyage: the first of four emergency cruises to study the spill. #URIGSO scientists deployed seabed drifters, bright yellow umbrellas with long pink stems, to track currents, predict the spread of oil, & assess impacts on marine ecosystems.

🌊🚢 Just weeks after arriving at URI in 1976, #RVEndeavor was thrust into action. On December 15, the tanker Argo Merchant ran aground off Nantucket, spilling more than 7.7 million gallons of oil into the ocean, one of the largest oil spills in U.S. history.
