New England's famous fisheries rely on tiny but mighty plankton. 😋🎣

That's why scientists keep a close eye on the offshore food web that fuels the region's marine economy through the @nes-lter.bsky.social

Our summer transect cruise has safely returned. Although, this "mixing event" would be interesting to survey...

Erin is expected to produce life-threatening surf and rip currents along the beaches of much of the east coast of the U.S. during the next several days. Beachgoers in those areas should follow advice from lifeguards, local authorities, and beach warning flags. weather.gov/safety/ripcurrent
Map showing Hurricane Erin’s projected path on August 19, 2025, with high rip current risk highlighted along most of the U.S. East Coast and moderate risk in parts of New England and Florida. Distant hurricanes can be deadly. Hurricanes that are far away can still create deadly rip currents and waves. Never assume that the ocean is safe, even if the weather is nice. For maximum safety, swim near a lifeguard. Check the forecast before you go. weather.gov/beach

Our summer transect cruise is on track! We can't wait to see all of the data and wave photos. Any unusual Hemiaulus blooms? Nice to get it all done before Erin "goes safely out to sea". #nsf @uslter.bsky.social @whoi.edu @urigso.bsky.social @wellesley.edu @noaa.gov

🌊 Investing in ocean science positions the U.S. as a leader in resilience and national security. Scripps' Margaret Leinen joins @whoi.edu's @pdemenocal.bsky.social & retired Navy admiral John Richardson to advocate for funding @noaa.gov, NSF & US Navy Research.

Opinion | Why U.S. dominance at sea is shrinking
The U.S. still has an advantage on the waves, but ocean science needs more — not less — investment.

Data Jam 2025 projects are in and they are fabulous! This year we had students Grade 5 - 12 sharing their work, practicing making sense of data and communicating the story they see. Students are creative and clever. @uslter.bsky.social @whoi.edu #nsffunded
