Thread: How did we get here?

University Workers for Palestine (UWP) formed in 2024. At first, we needed to meet up for events and protests supporting Palestine. We needed to connect and consider how to push our institutions to Boycott and Divest from Israel.
Two buttons: "Fund genocide", "Change 0.06% of investments". Sweating guy who can't decide is UniSaver.

In the first 48 hours of our new open letter we had 250 signatures. 20% of them were university workers who would joint UniSaver IF if had a BDS policy. BDS is both the ethical choice and good business sense ✅🍉

UNISAVER MUST DIVEST FROM GEN0C!DE

If UniSaver does not respond to our demand, we will launch a campaign to get unis across the motu to sever ties with UniSaver.

Was quite shocked when I compared my ASB KiwiSaver account with my Unisaver one on mindfulmoney.nz and discovered that Unisaver (which is the one I don’t have a choice about) was much more unethically invested (for the same overall settings)

3/ As someone who researches and teaches on climate justice, I am thoroughly appalled to see UniSaver is able to develop a low carbon fund, but not develop similar mechanisms to avoid funding genocide.

It's that time again apparently ⏰

1/ Emailing UniSaver representatives again about BDS, and you should too (especially if you're an Aotearoa uni worker, especially if you're a UniSaver member)
This week Israel unilaterally broke the ceasefire and have killed more than 700 people since doing so, including 200 children.

Great example of what all our associations and societies should be saying.

Aotearoa New Zealand Assn of Social Workers statement re Palestine 🇵🇸🍉 guide to actions Social Workers should take. I really appreciate clear statements from our professional body to empower us to fight for social justice everywhere. #ToitūTeTiriti #FreePalestine
Statement reads Tēnā koe Jane

In the past 72 hours, Israeli airstrikes have killed at least 591 Palestinians, including over 200 children, and injured more than 1,000 in Gaza. Over 70% of the casualties are women, children, and the elderly. The humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza and the West Bank demands urgent action.

As social workers, we cannot remain silent while innocent lives are lost, and communities suffer. In alignment with Neil Ballantyne’s Call to Action for Gaza, the Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers (ANZASW) stands in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

What ANZASW is Doing:

Advocating for Political Action – We endorse Professor Neil Ballantyne’s Call to Action and support the Green Party’s Members’ Bill to sanction Israel.

Engaging with Key Stakeholders – We will continue to explore partnerships with advocacy and humanitariano organisations working for Palestinian justice.

Creating Spaces for Advocacy – ANZASW remains committed to exploring ways to support members in taking a stand, advocating for change, and supporting Palestinian communities. What You Can Do:

Contact Your MP – Urge them to support Chlöe Swarbrick’s bill to ensure this issue is debated in Parliament. Just 6 more Government MPs need to support.

Raise Awareness – Share Neil Ballantyne’s Call to Action and other credible sources within your networks.

Engage and Take Action – Seek out opportunities to take action and reflect on how you, as a social worker, can make a meaningful impact in responding to this crisis. Watch Professor Neil’s webinar on challenging oppression, advancing social justice and protecting human rights.

As John Stuart Mill wrote in 1867:

"Let not any one pacify his conscience by the delusion that he can do no harm if he takes no part, and forms no opinion. Bad men need nothing more to compass their ends, than that good men should look on and do nothing."

If you take action, please inform Justice for Palestine. We also welcome any responses you receive from MPs. Guidance on writing to your MP is available through Justice for Palestine’s resources.

Ngā mihi,

ANZASW Board & Chief Executive

“Aotearoa New Zealand cannot remain a bystander to the slaughter of innocent people in Gaza. We can and must act now to sanction Israel for its crimes, just like we did with Russia for its illegal action in Ukraine,” says Green Party co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick. www.greens.org.nz/nz_must_act_...
NZ must act on Israel’s slaughter of children

The Greens just announced Labour has agreed to support the bill to skip the Biscuit Tin, and that all the need now is the support of 6 National MPs. So if your local MP is A: a National MP and B: not a Minister, consider writing to them and asking they support it too.

Have just written to my local MP asking him to support Chlöe Swarbrick's proposed Unlawful Occupation of Palestine Sanctions Bill, and I really encourage you to do the same.

He said he couldn't sleep from threats he was receiving.
He even wrote that he feared ICE "might come to my home."

NEWS: Last night, the Department of Homeland Security detained a Palestinian who helped lead the Columbia encampment.

Agents told him his visa was revoked. He said he had a green card. They were confused—then said that was revoked too.

His attorney demanded a warrant. Agents hung up instead.
