The sightings of #orca are facilitated by smaller marine mammals, which swim to harbours trying to avoid getting eaten. “They’re going in and around docks, #seals also hide under boats & killer #whales have to come in and look for them." Andrew Trites

J pod called on the Orcasound Lab hydrophones for ~1.25 hr this eve as they traveled north in Haro Strait. Thanks to listeners for detecting their calls, whistles, and clicks. Here's the whole bout, but listen at 6pm for really cool vocalizations!

Last week the drone pilots in my lab captured this image (photo 1) of a large sea lion haul out @ San Carlos Beach in Monterey during our monthly surveys. Last year (photo 2) a large sea lion haul out was seen at the same beach. This might be turning into a new haul out site. @uwsafs.bsky.social

Our drone team recently returned from a survey trip where they captured this large sea lion haul out on San Carlos Beach; a popular dive spot in Monterey. The beach was the scene of a similar large haul out at the same time last year. @uwsafs.bsky.social @uwmarinebiology.bsky.social #drones

The Mazama newt is found in only one place in the world: Crater Lake. But this tiny amphibian is disappearing, due to invasive crayfish taking over its habitat. We’ve teamed up with the National Park Service and High Desert Museum to give this rare newt-y cutie a fighting chance.
