Look, this isn't a glamorous answer, but if be lying if I haven't continued to think about this since it was on a chapter page in a 5th grade science book we had nearly 3 decades ago.
I am a paramecium that cannot do a simple sum, and it's a rather well-known fact I'm quite unable to subtract. In his second novel, Matthew Stover sets his rag-tag group of mercenaries against a bunch of desert tribes and their weird god they keep in a box who are besieging the city of Jebus. This was probably the fifth book of his I read, and absolutely not a historical novel, but damn is it great.
