CH has made significant stride in areas where the left (and particularly the communists) used to be strong.

This, combined with the decline of the far left in recent years, has fueled theories according to which there would be a transfer of votes between these two camps.
July 16, 2025 at 1:40 PM
The Portuguese far right party CH has been growing spectacularly, shattering views of the country as immune to this phenomenon.

This has prompted a discussion about where their votes come from.

Some thoughts on this, prompted by newly released survey data:

Muito feliz de saber que a terceira edição de "O Fim da Vergonha: Como a Direita Radical se Normalizou" vai para as bancas em breve.

Quando este processo começou, nunca imaginei que o livro pudesse vir a ser recebido como tem sido. Muito obrigado por lerem!

Some thoughts on the Portuguese election last Sunday.

1. The main story here is one of left versus right.

The right as a whole scores a major win, getting 2/3 of the MPs (likely sufficient for a constitutional amendment, eg).

The left as a whole was decimated.

We also look at the conditions under which these costs are higher.

We find no evidence that the effects differ based on a number of characteristics of the confederate, the passer-by, or the area—with one exception: the costs of showing far-right views are higher in a left-wing area.

We find that there are, indeed, social costs to showing far-right preferences.

A confederate wearing a far-right t-shirt is almost 3 times more likely to be denied interaction when compared to a white control t-shirt; and 2 times more likely when compared to t-shirts of other parties.

We employed six confederates (3M/3F) and ran the experiment in areas with different ideological outlooks (more left or right-wing).

The main outcome we're interested in is whether the passer-by refused to interact with the confederate—the main social cost that can come from this interaction.

But, in the real world, are there really such costs?

To answer this question, we ran a field experiment in Madrid (Spain) where we had confederates wear t-shirts of different parties (or a control white t-shirt) and approach passers-by to ask for help.

I am very excited to share a new working paper coauthored with @amaliaab.bsky.social.

Using a field experiment, we find that, in the real world, it is more costly to express far-right preferences than other political preferences.
