My book “The Normalization of the Radical Right” has recently come out in the US.

If you're interested, in this thread I’ll link different ways of learning about the book and its argument (I’ll keep adding if more come out).

First, here is the link to the book: academic.oup.com/book/57946

🆕💼 Today marks a new chapter: I'm starting as a Researcher at @moreincommonuk.bsky.social in Spain!

After 4 years working on my PhD, it was time for the next step. Grateful to my supervisors and colleagues, I learned so much and will miss working alongside them.

Fair, but I also think this is compatible with not being to confident one "knows the truth" :) But having a strong intuition (eg based on background) about the way something works is often a very good way of coming up with good theories.

I think the idea is that one should (a) cultivate an inner understanding of how the world works and (b) apply it to questions where that understanding clashes with established knowledge the most. I think that is compatible with the motivation being to understand the world.

I loved this post (like all in this substack).

Reminded me of the argument by Geddes (2003) that most good research ideas come from annoyance with established wisdom that clashes with one's inner sense of how the world works.

Really recommend reading this one:

New Etched in Marble post: catherineeunicedevries.substack.com/p/etched-in-...

Timothy Garton Ash has for decades chronicled Europe’s upheavals with a historian’s depth & a journalist’s eye.

In my conversation with Garton Ash, one theme stood out: writing as a defense of democracy.

York has seen a steep rise in racist assaults -both verbal and physical- in recent weeks. This should not be tolerated. If you are around on Saturday, join.

I have never seen such a blistering rebuke of a President by a federal judge. He is telling us clearly to stand up for our liberty against a dictator. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Poll after poll shows corruption is THE issue voters care about. And Jeffries goes out of his way to praise Adams, whose public corruption charges were dropped after Trump’s DOJ unceremoniously shut the case down?

Democrats have the winning hand right in front of them. Wild that they won’t play it.
statement titled “Leader Jeffries Statement on Mayor Eric L. Adams.” It says Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries thanked Adams for decades of service as an NYPD officer, state senator, Brooklyn Borough President, and New York City’s 110th mayor. The statement highlights achievements under Adams, including reduced violent crime, more affordable housing, and recovery from COVID-19. Jeffries acknowledges ongoing challenges like the high cost of living but says meaningful progress was made. He thanks Adams for his service and says that in the coming days his focus will shift to Republican healthcare and government funding issues, and that he will comment on the remaining mayoral candidates before early voting begins.

This seems important in a world where so many countries are turning against immigration:

"A structural estimation of a model of endogenous growth and migrations suggests the increased immigration to the US since 1965 may have increased innovation and wages by 5%."

If you know where to find only a subset of these elections (e.g., federal), that's also very much appreciated! The only thing we really do need is for them to be post-electoral.
