Extreme deregulation of the energy sector means electricity companies can increase prices as much as they want. Ireland’s free-market approach to energy companies is clearly not working: prices are going up and not down and there’s no real competition

As profitable energy companies raise customers’ prices, TD says it’s time to bring back price regulation
“We are approaching the point (if we’re not already there) where we can justifiably claim that competition has failed,” says Labour energy spokesperson Ciarán Ahern.

If you have a platform, use it to speak for those whose voices are not heard.

Society is a better place when we stand up to be counted.

It is heartening, in these days of wall-to-wall televised breathlessness for the politics of hate, to see ordinary folk voting for inclusion

Gary Lineker on winning the National TV Award,

"It's not lost on me why I might have won this award"

"Aside from presenting Match of the Day.."

"Also, I think it demonstrates that perhaps it's ok sometimes to use our platform to speak up on behalf of those who have no voice"

Every year I see several of my students making HUGE efforts to attend lecture and university events, commuting long distance at least 4 days a week. It is so unfair to anyone in this situation
The student housing needs to be addressed properly

Constraints in the construction labour market significantly impact Ireland’s ability to meet housing demand targets. Policymakers can ease these through targeted measures aimed at increasing the construction workforce and adding to the existing housing stock

No one likes to live in arrangements like this, but vulnerable tenants are often unaware of their rights and lack of options so they are easily coerced into stressful and precarious situations.

Why are bosses turning against remote work?

Short answer: it’s easier to control, monitor and perhaps exploit workers in the physical office

“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment & counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back into a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”

It costs a lot less to house people.

It makes an analysis on how Independent Ireland & independents benefited by leveraging the housing-immigration link due to less party discipline seems in other parties and on how future far-right growth depends on addressing econ / housing grievances & avoiding nativism

I was reading this new report on housing, political parties & the far right in Ireland
It brings together some things already known about the anti-migration rhetoric fueling racism, but it's interesting to see the analysis of how political parties have responded to it
