Well that’s a bit disappointing! I’m hoping a bunch will end up with my tomatoes in canned sauce later this season, so hopefully I can still have some last until next year that way!

Looks like a slime mold, probably Fuligo septica (aka Scrambled egg slime mold or Dog vomit slime mold). Usually harmless in my experience. Will be gone in a few days.

I’ve read that it works as a mulch— retains moisture, blocks weeds, possibly deters some pests, and as it breaks down it releases nutrients into the soil. Not commonly used where I live, so I don’t have much knowledge or experience with it. It was free so I’m putting it to good use!

Will do! I have a lot more I am going to spread around the other tomatoes once I’ve harvested all the radishes in the beds. So far it seems to do a nice job of suppressing any weeds. It’s been super wet and rainy lately so I haven’t been able to test out water conservation.
