We asked ARC residents and users if they'd like to take part in a photography project to help us capture life in the ARC. We gave participants a single use film camera for a day, with the task to take photos of whatever they liked in the building.

Here are the results...

The article’s title is misleading - there is nothing, even metaphorically, about design, and it’s far from the original research title “Who are learning designers in post-pandemic Australasian universities?”.

Today at #ISATT2025, I presented an ideation project that connected my lived experiences as a youth trainer in European #NonFormalEducation with my current PhD study on teaching development of UK #HE lecturers. Thanks for the chance to think out loud! @isatt2025.bsky.social @uofglasgow.bsky.social

Well, that's just shooting at all limbs at once.
Curious if such attack will redirect international students to the UK, as it was already seen in the recent enrolling undergrad student numbers 🤔

Donald Trump’s move to block Harvard University from enrolling international students is a “full-frontal attack” on the institution which will have wider ramifications for US economic strength and soft power, scholars have said. @patrickjack.bsky.social reports

Exactly. Such meaningless new immigration rules aimed at reducing legal migration from the recent white paper can only do harm to the drowning HE sector and stagnating UK economy, not even speaking about losing thousands of skilled potential researchers aspiring to continue their careers in the UK.

Extending the pathway to UK citizenship to more than 10 years could deter many international researchers from settling in the country, given the additional cost of visa and NHS fees, ministers have been warned

Speaking about power outages in Spain 🇪🇸 and Portugal 🇵🇹 and the role of the “material” in our lives… Sociomaterialism reminds us about a tangible material world we face every day, and how it not simply mediates but literally shapes our existence and the social reality we live in. 🔋

🚨 Support our Graduate Teaching Assistants!

This year has seen a spate of cuts in real terms to GTA pay and conditions across many departments that left an already underpaid and overworked workforce at breaking point.

Sign our petition to support crucial staff: speakout.web.ucu.org.uk/gta-glasgow/
UCU Campaign for GTAs
Calling for Fair Pay, Equal Pay, Secure Pay Fair pay: To eliminate the endemic overworking of GTAs expected to perform tasks not within those stipulated as their responsibility in their employment contracts – particularly, but not limited to, extra administrative work and contributions to the creation of course content. Equal pay: To raise allocated preparation time to a reasonable level which truly represents the work that GTAs must devote to delivering pedagogically sound teaching. There should be transparency of workload models for GTAs, e.g. preparation time, marking time and end discrepancies in pay rates and time allocations for different tasks across colleges. Secure pay: To ensure all GTAs are issued initially with two-year contracts, as per the University’s policy.

Mmm, 'democratic collapse and persecution of marginalised groups could lead to more international students for the UK' is quite the good news story.

No way, UKRI-funded PhD students are now eligible for a stipend that matches the national minimum-wage level - an unseen generosity! 🤑

I mean, having more money than less money is always good news (not for me already though), but I can't think how this can be celebrated at all.

Wonderful first PGR meeting today organised by the PGR reps! So happy to see so many faces discussing and proposing ideas to enhance our experience as PhD researchers.
Special thanks to my partner in crime Diana Cruz 💜

⚠️ 2 out of 3 doctoral researchers do NOT find opportunities to teach at their HEIs.

Honestly, it is very worrisome to find such a trend among HEIs, which would rather overload salaried staff with extra teaching rather than employ GTAs and put efforts into developing a new generation of faculty. 😡
Postgraduate Research Experience Survey 2024
Opportunity to teach or demonstrate fell from 45% in 2020 to 37% in 2024 spiking shortly in 2023 (46%).

The largest decline is in terms of teaching opportunities, which are now at their lowest level since before the pandemic. It is well documented that students are facing a squeeze on affordability of higher education, but HEIs are also under significant pressure financially.
While it may be relatively cost effective to deploy PGRs to teach on modules rather than bring in temporary staff, we can also speculate that HEIs may be taking decisions to distribute teaching load more widely among salaried staff as an even more cost-effective
solution. Whatever is driving this, it appears that there are fewer PGRs being afforded this key developmental (and financial) opportunity than in recent years.
