House Firearms sub reports out @amylaufer55.bsky.social bill requiring firearms in a car be stored out of view--violation is a civil fine and possible towing. This is a much cleaner bill than the one in the Senate specifying where and how it must be stored.

Really hope this is finally the year Paid Family Medical leave is signed into law in VA. First step today as it reports from House Labor sub. Pretty sure I met the patron @brianasewellva.bsky.social over eight years ago advocating for this for the VA Campaign for a Family Friendly Economy!

January 29, 2026 at 8:21 PM
After long speeches and arm-twisting, @aaronrouse.bsky.social bill to change Virginia Beach to a single-member district local government (no at-large City Council members) passes the Senate. It needed 27 votes to pass, because it's a charter change.

Goofy Del Wren Williams stands up to complain about the enabling legislation for the reproductive rights constitutional amendment, which will go before the voters on the Nov. general election ballot. Oddly enough, he didn't bother to propose a floor amendment to fix his concerns.
January 29, 2026 at 5:46 PM
House passes enabling legislation and language to go with Marriage Equality constitutional amendment that will be on the November general election ballot.
January 29, 2026 at 5:36 PM

House Public Safety sub reports out great @jcole4va.bsky.social bill to ensure educational and professional skills re-entry programs are more available to incarcerated folks, sooner after arriving at a facility.
January 29, 2026 at 2:12 PM
Unanimous support on the policy of a strong education program for those who are incarcerated...but whether it's ever important enough to find money in the budget is another question. (The cost-benefit in terms of recidivism almost certainly make it fiscally worthwhile.)
January 29, 2026 at 1:49 PM
So delighted to see unanimous report from Public Safety sub on @hollyseiboldva.bsky.social bill to have VADOC create a standardized OBJECTIVE dress code for prison visits, so that people will not be turned back because a guard thinks their blouse is too tight or their bra strap is showing.
January 29, 2026 at 1:32 PM

House Crim sub reports Del @marcussimon.com bill to better define "willful failure to appear in court" to pertain to intentionally not showing up to avoid the justice system, rather than simply missing a bus or not being able to get out of work without being fired, and to make it not a felony.
