#Abundance bros act like civil society is the enemy & enviro laws aren't relevant.

Even the pope disagrees ;)

"Everyone in society, through [NGOs] and advocacy groups, must put pressure on governments to develop and implement more rigorous regulations, procedures and controls."
E&E News: Pope Leo calls for environmental action worldwide
The first American pope urged people everywhere to become politically active on issues like climate change.

California is setting a path to lift its moratorium on CO2 pipelines with new safety regs. But the state won't set a distance requirement protecting communities, which oil lobbyists opposed.

Advocates say it's a recipe for disaster. from me & @levernews.com

California opens the door for Big Oil’s CO2 pipeline plans
States will be responsible for keeping people safe as the oil industry pushes a massive buildout of carbon dioxide pipelines near communities.

Yesterday we launched CACTI, a #SanFrancisco Bay Area coalition against carbon capture & storage (CCS). I spoke, along with others. It was a powerful event!

Huge thanks @foodandwater.bsky.social for your key organizing role 💙

Ask anyone in the "Abundance Faction" why the Koch brothers are funding their movement, and they'll say it's good to have a big tent.

But the Koch brothers are truly evil, not least for their decades-long (and successful) work to destroy US understanding of climate science.

It turns out, the core of abundance is a lot of Silicon Valley money, with a healthy dollop of Koch funding too. The conference taking place today is the perfect example of this. It does include a lot of who you'd expect, like figures from the Niskanen Center and The Argument

But the conference also features figures from the Koch-backed group Stand Together, and from the deeply conservative group, the Pacific Legal Foundation (which

A devastating review of "Abundance" (the book) in @nybooks.com. I mean, whew!
The evidentiary core of each chapter consists of a summary of the academic work of a few experts, usually economists, with frequent and lengthy quotations, as well as the occasional interview, whose conclusions are repeated uncritically. (To take one example, they quote without scrutiny the claim of Zoom CEO Eric Yuan that he is requiring employees to work in person in order to foster trust, rather than to impose discipline or to recoup the costs of commercial real estate. They give no sense of the unruly literatures on their subjects, the ranges of disagreement, the difficult problems and mutually exclusive solutions. They claim to set an agenda for a new liberal political order, but what they have done is read some economists and argue, again, for deregulation.

Judge's order: halt construction, stop bringing new detainees, & begin winding down operations. ✊ ⚖️

So-called Alligator Alcatraz should have never been built. This is an important victory.

Grateful to @biologicaldiversity.org colleagues & others for this!

No way around it: California is starting to backslide on climate. And it’s (mostly) Gavin Newsom’s fault.

My column today looks at Newsom’s failures on rooftop solar, oil industry accountability, home electrification and more: www.latimes.com/environment/...

31% of oil & gas sites near Kern County homes, schools & parks are leaking
37% of leaks are allowed by regulatory loopholes
The “heavy oil” exemption shields 68% of CA’s oil & gas sites from leak monitoring & repair rules

A landmark legal ruling leaves no doubt that continuing fossil fuel production and use, let alone expanding it, violates the law.

Big news: After nearly a decade, DuPont has agreed to settle a class-action suit brought by the people of Hoosick Falls, NY, the community I spent years following for my book. All told, the village's roughly 3,000 residents will receive about $90 million in damages. #PFAS #ForeverChemicals

Hellbenders as emissaries:

"The same forces that drove the decline of these amphibians sacrificed public health in Appalachia. Their demise echoes the struggle of communities that continue to be jeopardized by extractive industries & betrayed by politics."
