there is few (no?) more compelling cases for public control over investment than AI atm: the biggest misallocation of resources possibly in human history.

What's that the Italian navy shadowing the #GlobalSumudFlotilla is not about protection but is about using rescue as interception?

It's the logic of Mare Nostrum all over again and I wish some people weren't so naïve to think militarism had anything to offer a politics of solidarity and justice.
Global Sumud Flotilla Statement saying the Italian naval mission sent to shadow them is trying to disrupt their efforts through providing opportunities for rescue

In food history, we notice how super-refined foods--gelatin, vienna sausage, white bread--lose class and become horrifying once they become industrialized. Suddenly, fingermarks in bread dough demonstrate skill, not clumsiness.

Post-chatGPT, I'm feeling this about writing. Smoothness feels gross.

Historic: Italy is on strike, disrupting business as usual & protesting complicity in Israel’s genocide & apartheid against Palestinians, bringing major cities to a halt.

Hundreds of thousands are demonstrating across 80 cities & towns, from south to north, blocking roads, ports & railway stations.

Yes!
I just spoke to a librarian and they are spending time trying to find fake citations - they are being given pages of fake references to find via inter-library loan
Again, digital asbestos - quick to produce, but so much cost and labour to clean-up.
shannonmattern.bsky.social
Yet another demonstration that AI is not a labor-saving device; it merely displaces the cleanup and mitigation (in realms where care, caution, accuracy, etc., actually matter) onto other people

If you are on the TPUSA list of professors or are an otherwise visible left academic, I strongly recommend reviewing your digital footprint. Is your address public information? What about your family members?

Academics are under unrelenting pressure to accept the narrative of the inevitability of #generativeAI & to embrace it in teaching & learning. We resist - because it is ecologically destructive, ethically corrupt, & because it undermines the thinking abilities that make us both human & intelligent.

“So, the rise of these industrial-scale computing facilities that are needed for A.I. and other Internet applications is certainly one of the factors driving up prices.”

“And I think there’s a chance that A.I. is going to drive our bills even higher in the future.”
How AI infrastructure is driving a sharp rise in electricity bills

To friends who are doing field work & are recording stuff: I'm ready to replace my recording device with a more decent one. Do you have any suggestions for something very portable, easy to set up that will give decent quality audio of conversations inside (and sometimes outside: wind)? Thaaanks <3
