You can still pick just one candidate if you want. Ranked-choice voting gives you (optional) backup options.

It’s intended to help encourage more candidates to run and engage and help voters worry less about strategy.

TLDR: yeah

Generally RCV means single winner races (like the House) rather than the senate.

Also, it’s optional like in NSW.

Ranked-choice voting in the US is just a different name for preferential voting. Though the way the US generally implements it (single winner) is closer to Australia than Ireland.
