The “innocent bystanders“ quoted in this article: a Virginia whisky CEO, an Iowa whisky CEO, and an upstate New York golf resort owner. Wonder who they voted for 🤔

Yesterday it was hot, so we took one last paddle near Skootamatta dam. Saw kingfisher, heron, kestrel, loon and a feeding otter. Lots of sparrows and juncos. The plan was for nearby Sheldrake Lake but we stopped at the wrong boat launch and didn’t realize it til later. I would say we lucked out

Today we hiked along the river near Slate Falls. Even at low water the rapids were impressive. Found swamp dock, white turtlehead and marsh speedwell. Also a black dart caterpillar, which if confirmed is a first for our county. And lucky us, a couple cardinal flowers still in bloom.

The lost dog (called Monty, we learned) is back with her owners. She’s a sweetie but that’s a big sigh of relief for us.
My truck still drives after the deer collision but needs some work. Hopefully should be covered by insurance. And so the world turns in the middle of nowhere 🌎

Constant Creek is too low to paddle very far right now, even in my little blow-up boat. But it was pretty and lush with lots of birds. Low water is great for revealing animal tracks and trails through the cattails. And the local old toothless dude at the takeout turned out to be friendly enough too

Today at lunch I saw a false bee-killer, Promachus bastardii. These giant robber flies are impressive predators of other large insects, often catching their prey in mid-flight. They’re not super common around here

Yesterday I was photographing bugs in the yard and I caught a green lacewing with something attached to its forewing. That something turns out to be Forcipomyia eques, a parasitic biting midge with only 5 observations worldwide on iNat, and zero in Canada. Pretty amazing!
