Hello again, re-introducing myself a year later, giving this app another go! My scientific vision has stood unaltered 😉 but I am now a first-year postdoc at the department for sustainable and bio-inspired materials at the Max Planck Institute of colloids and interfaces 💡🧪🌍

#HiSciSky, I am a final-year biophotonics PhD student, working on nanolasers and microscopy and interested in bringing some of this technology to the field of marine science, conservation & sustainability. I also love running & the outdoors. Looking forward to connect 💡

I have used CAD before - many companies (like thorlabs) have stl files of their equipment you can download and just drop in… maybe the light rays are easier to add with something like Inkscape later on?

You probably already know, but scallop eyes have really cool optics 😎

Calm before the storm of welcoming around 7000 kids tomorrow to check out beautiful colours of nature under the microscope! #potsdamScienceDay

People from Berlin & Brandenburg: come to our family-friendly science day on 10. May! See below for more info (and for a video of my hand fooling around with some fun ~hands on~ experiments) 😄

📅 Am 10. Mai kannst du übers Wasser rennen und springen – aber nur, wenn du schnell genug bist!

Mit der richtigen Menge Maisstärke wird Wasser plötzlich fest. Was steckt dahinter? Eine sogenannte #nichtNewtonsche Flüssigkeit: Unter Krafteinwirkung verändert sich ihre Viskosität.

Thinking about when we both attended the #ICRS2022 without knowing anyone there (at least me) and connected through the Twitter hashtag the first day!

I have followed the #royalsociety #musk fellowship case over the last months, which culminated in this disappointment: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2025/mar/25/royal-society-decides-not-to-take-disciplinary-action-against-elon-musk

As a consequence […]

Dear Editor,

Thank you for asking me to referee this paper.

As much as I would like to accept your invitation, I have decided not to referee any article that is published by the Royal Society, after the Society's decision to keep Elon Musk as its fellow (see: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2025/mar/25/royal-society-decides-not-to-take-disciplinary-action-against-elon-musk).

Elon Musk is leading a large-scale effort to destroy science and its benefits to humanity, therefore he is the anti-thesis to the Society's mission "to recognise, promote and support excellence in science and to encourage the development and use of science for the benefit of humanity". Fellows of the Royal Society argued that revoking Musk’s fellowship could undermine trust in science. Unfortunately, not revoking Musk's fellowship has underminded my trust in the Royal Society. The Royal Society is free to keep Musk's fellowship; in turn I am free to not provide my free labor to the Royal Society.

Help Microscope folks:

On a new Nikon TIRF objective, the collar got stuck in the position shown.

Anyone else had that happen? Any way to unstuck it (warm up, other)?

So for MEEP there is a conda package which works with Linux and Mac; but for windows only with Ubuntu from what I gather. That is somewhat difficult for this project which is supposed to run on a PC with limited admin rights etc - so the less “tinkering” involved, the better…
veratitze.bsky.social
Thanks, we looked at MEEP but apparently you need Linux / Ubuntu which unfortunately poses a problem for us. Just out of curiosity, what’s your case against the open-source FDTD codes?
veratitze.bsky.social
Hi photonics hive mind, who can recommend an open source python FDTD solver that runs on anaconda (windows)? 👩🏼‍🔬🧪💡

First time today being a sidekick in a scientific stock photo shoot! (the PI talks excitedly to postdocs while standing next to a microscope type of shots). Now I regret not brushing my hair this morning… 👩🏼‍🔬

My personal opinion is that there is no such thing as being apolitical. Staying silent is a choice too, and it also has consequences…

We put our protocol preprint on researchsquare which was the preprint server recommended by the journal. They take protocols but the submission process was a bit finicky.

Can’t believe I’m typing this but…

FUCK IT IM PLANNING A STAND UP FOR SCIENCE PROTEST IN DC.

If you want to be involved, be dm me. I’m nervous, I’ve never done this before, but we gotta be the change we want to see in the world.
