A transcript is the only way to make video or audio content accessible to someone who is both deaf and blind. Transcripts can be converted into braille, to be read on a refreshable braille output device.

In 2025, sixteen-year-old Mae placed in the top 50 out of Braille Challenge participants worldwide.

But just four years ago, they couldn't read.

A Cerebral/Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) diagnosis and braille changed everything.

Read Mae's story in our latest blog post: bit.ly/46GjTn3
Mae smiles as they lean over and type on their blue Perkins brailler. They wear white over the ear headphones and dark sunglasses. A quote from Mae at the bottom of the image reads, "People with CVI should have the same options that blind people have to get to try new tools, be part of a community, and be supported to access the world the best way that they can."

New: What I wish I was taught in school as a disabled person.

I’ve taken to the blog to add some important lessons to the curriculum. Here’s my timetable which would include independent living skills, disability advocacy, and so much more. lifeofablindgirl.com/2025/09/21/w...
What I wish I was taught in school as a disabled person - Life of a Blind Girl
There are many things I wish I’d learned during my time in education that weren’t on the curriculum. Since I can’t turn back the clock, I’m sharing them on the blog instead.

It depends on the student’s tech and comfort with nonvisual coding— some students prefer a different IDE or using the command line for R, as navigating RStudio with screen reader can be overwhelming. If there is a way to pre-teach R accessibility or share info with student, that would help a lot!

I have low vision and a degree in data science. My advice: use longer image descriptions for code, offer cheat sheets in a format other than PDF, provide copies of content shown on the board so student can view on their own device, allow use of VSCode or other IDE for robust screen reader support
