They're not having fun! The bourgeoisie hates the aristocracy because it has fun, and so critiques its decadence. But when the bourgeoisie goes to party it cant ever get beyond the surface appearance of enjoyment. (I realize this particular line is very much Raoul Vaneigem)

The fantasy that you can observe without feeling, that you can act without being acted upon, this is how you are both perfect victim and total master, anything that pierces the veil of your control, even mere being perceived, is a total violation of your sovereign right to act without consequence

This is what fascism provides. A mask that is your true face. A wall between you and the other that allows you to communicate without ever being asked to listen. A face without responsibility, reciprocity or sociality. A way to completely refuse your own inner life

These bodies can only imitate pleasure, cycling through different modes and genres of dance as their plasticine canine visages sneer at the camera. These are not masks, they look just the same beneath. The layer of plastic gives them permission to show their real face

There is no pleasure in the way these dog masked courtiers move except in the mockery they offer to the camera. These are not bodies caught in the total abandon of convention as you might find in the middle of the dance floor at 4 am at the rave. There you find decadence, beautiful, gleaming

When the desire is for pure reflection or pure projection, when power-over has destroyed the capacity for pleasure. There is nothing 'decadent' about Epsteins island or Mar-a-lago, they are aesthetics and experiences of excess and power, not luxury but control

The argument that decadence causes the fall is just protestant work ethic with a healthy dose of British style homophobia, it is not decadence it the inability to enjoy anything other than power itself, not decadence but aesthetics-as-domination

This video speaks of power in utter decline. The sunset of empire, where the decadence of the rich is pure empty referent. No meaning beyond the power to refuse meaning, signifying only your own refusal to signify, domination found in the fact you can speak only for the pleasure of your own hearing

They feel it in their bones. They know their time is ending. They know the mobs approach. Their class is to be drowned in fire and blood. Perhaps if they ironically embrace their greatest fear...perhaps they can just let us eat cake...

Can't get over how unironically capitalists are embracing Versailles aesthetics have seen two different marketing campaigns based on Marie Antoinette they're taunting us and daring us to cut off their heads

They did it with the War on Drugs, the PIC, with Iraq and Gaza. They will stoke your outrage out of power and plead their political helplessness in it. The Democrats are a core part of this regime. Dems have been in power over and over and over these last 20 years. The trajectory never changed

Obviously history is always weirder and wilder than we can anticipate though, and I dont think its wrong to consider! Definitely necessary to resist the "orange man bad" thesis!

I was arguing last year that the worst case scenario was a counter coup where a Vance-Newsom bipartisan unity govt was put in place. But events have moved such that the kind of unified fascist populace is nowhere near as available

It certainly has already saved us AND the emergence of Vance doesnt undo the damage already done to the coalition and the mvmt. If he died January 22nd, 2025 that would've been a disaster. Now his shambling corpse may be the only thing holding his popular base together

i once read "the rights you think criminals should have are the rights you think everyone should have because the state can criminalize anyone" and it changed how i think about everything

I do think that anyone could do a better job running the state than him but the question is if any of them can also hold the movement together

We've all been in such extreme fight or flight and high anxiety and unprocessed grief that we desperately desperately need moments of collective joy
January 19, 2026 at 2:57 PM
Eh I don't really agree but even if Vance somehow has actual organizational acuity the joy of the thing happening and the pleasure everyone will feel will be extremely important and valuable
