“what if they change their mind later” is never asked about cis kids going through puberty, even though they might be trans, which reveals that cis people view transness as a defect
The only truly irreversible thing a trans child is likely to do is take their own life. "What if they do something irreversible?" actually means "theyre not allowed to make a decision!"

as I said, puberty blockers were always a bad compromise, trans kids deserve HRT and the cis will never be happy either way so compromising with them on a solution that is bad for trans kids was always gonna backfire
And let's not even get started on the absurdity of looking for a positive impact from a preventative measure, where the expected outcome is "not getting worse"

This is not in disagreement with OP at all, but I think we all quietly, lowkey imagine the very funny "are we the baddies" bit could be a real thing. But like, they know they're the bad guys. They think it makes them cool. Later, after you destroy them and their movement, they'll pretend otherwise
