Thousands of phantom stingers pierce my skin, leaving no evidence but for the shaking of my hands. I flip the wooden sign on the front door to “Closed,” sighing as the cold winter daylight streams in through the glass panes. It reflects little white squares on the knobby wooden floor. Funny. Kinda makes me want to play hopscotch. As if I could. I heave a deep sigh, glancing around my apothecary. Dust motes swirl in circular ballets, bouncing off each other in fireworks of throat-scratching particles. How poetic. Limping, I hobble over to my counter, where piles of the most common herbs lay, untouched. I’m fucked.

When cursed trans Prince Casper Sweetwater is caught and forced to live as his deadname, he thinks all hope is lost. He’s to be married off to a stranger, and to make sure he doesn’t run away, he’s been assigned a constant elven guard named Darrow Broadside. Desperate to return to the rebellion planning to kill the king, Casper realizes that his only chance of survival, to live as his true self will be if he breaks his curse. He enlists the assistance of a palace mage to help. She discovers that the cure to the curse is in Darrow’s homeland, which means that Casper cannot be cured unless he leaves. Casper must figure out how to escape the palace while dodging his suitor and his shadow. The only problem is, Darrow is very handsome and shockingly kind, and Casper is very gay. He must fight off distraction (or invite it in) to have any hope of freedom.

Snippet from today’s writing session!
The thick canopy of tenebrous trees whips past me as I sprint, gaze at the sky and fist grasping the locket at my sternum. Flickers of sunlight filter through the twisted leaves. Each breath is hampered by the tight binding wrapped around my chest. I can’t keep running like this. Heart throbbing, I dive to the right, somersaulting behind a particularly thick trunk with peeling umber bark. Bushes shield me on either side. Perfect. I'd say I have about ten seconds before I’ve lost my lead. I let go of Mom’s locket, adrenaline thick in my veins. Reaching under my tunic, my fingers catch on the thick, rough fabric coiled around my breasts like a constricting serpent. I tied it pretty tight. Finding the tucked knot, I snap my fingers on my right hand, a flame bursting from the tip of my index finger. It burns through the fibers, a smoky scent flooding the air and heat rising on my flesh. Willing the flame hotter, I sear through the knot, and the binding unravels.
