My introverted self would probably enjoy living in Berlin, at least for quite some time. I did enjoy that time when for five days I was able to ride the Bahns and buses without talking to anyone and with so much space between me and other people.

I sometimes worry if I as a teacher am not nurturing enough. The student is of course responsible for their own quest (and thirst) for knowledge, but sometimes I wonder if I led them close enough to the proverbial fountain.

I hate it when Duolingo does not understand me when I pronounce "euro" in German, but the sweet lady at a Späti near Berlin Zoo station does 😂

As a teacher of historiography, I am afraid of what generative AI can do to my students when they present their readings in class.
*If* the info is accurate, is of course, a giant if. Not only is the generated content often wrong, it's prejudiced. I've seen how it warps historical content in subtle or sometimes not so subtle and harmful ways. Learning how widely ChatGPT et al. are being used in the field is terrifying.
There is no way to use ChatGPT ethically or wisely. If the info is accurate, you didn’t learn it. Also, it’s built on stolen data and generative AI is going to further harm our environment. There are no upsides.

It pains me to see that, in the reckoning of Kirk's legacy by some religious groups, the voices of blacks, migrants, and other people whom he marginalized are once again silenced by focusing only on his Christian side and ignoring the hateful things that he said. Even in death, he won.

Was talking with a colleague about what it means to be Christian in light of recent events. We ended up agreeing that it is the Communists who have embodied Jesus's words the most, and have declared it in their lives to love the people and work towards their liberation.

Lol did people just predict my future publishability by my current research score??

Fernweh, wanderlust, whatever you call it... I want to be on a plane again to some long-haul destination!

I was not able to take a photo of it, but there's a Spätkauf in Kreuzberg, just across Görlitzer Bahnhof, with a very witty name: Spätify! 😂

I love my own city in more ways than one, but as a cyclist, I kind of immediately fell in love with Berlin's bike infrastructure. It feels like rider safety is the most important thing when they planned all of this rather than merely number of miles of bike lanes made.

Finally bought a ticket for an upcoming long-haul trip. We thank the kindness of our parents to an early-career academic like me!

Lowkey want to subscribe to the New Yorker mostly because the free tote bag looks cute. Buuut it's too expensive for an early-career academic!

Reposting for future reference! While not necessarily a comparative approach, Prof. Michael Pante's "A Capital City at the Margins" which explored the history of QC, former capital of 🇵🇭, and its peculiar centrality and marginality in Metropolitan Manila.
Seeking your suggestions

What’s your favourite book on cities? I’m particularly interested in scholarly books that compare cities or use a connected histories approach (architectural/urban history/art/social history).

Any historical period and region of the world is welcome, thank you!

It is very much part of our job to think but there is so much going on, there's no space in our days to think anymore

If there is one song that best describes the general atmosphere at the University of the Philippines Diliman, it will be "Minsan" by Eraserheads (a band which btw was formed in UP Diliman). This song is the perfect mix of nostalgia and friendship amidst the lush, sylvan setting of Diliman.

I find it ironic that staying long-term in Iloilo, a Hiligaynon-speaking province, made me even more aware and proud of my Tagalog roots. My exposure and use of the local language here made me appreciate my own native language more as well as its nuances and intricacies.

Our campus might not seem bikeable at first glance, but I think there are still lots of opportunities to support active mobility here. For one, there is a bus/jeepney stop on the road leading to the fisheries labs. It would be great to place a protected bike parking area there +

I would have loved to go to Manila (City of Manila) today, but with the feast of Jesus the Nazarene crowding its streets today, I would not even dare touch the city's borders!

The holiday season has officially put to sleep any academic brain cell I have left for this year. There is already so much to do for next year, and I can not afford to be too lax. I need to get some writing done tomorrow!
