Hello, new followers! 👋

I post about a blend of climate, tech, urbanism, and biking. To start y'all off, here's a blog post I made in Sept. 2024 about owning a cargo e-bike, and how it can do 90% of what a car can, but for 10% of the cost: viktorkoves.com/2024/09/21/y...
Your First EV Could Be A Cargo E-Bike | Viktor Köves
EVs are here, but I want to show you that your first EV could just be a cargo e-bike that can replace most car trips, and save you a boat-load of money!

To anyone who says biking is weather dependant, New Yorkers remind us rain only requires an appropriate jacket

Ladies and gentlemen, we have the answer to my Fisker Ocean question - the electric ride-sharing rules and a big lease agency purchase!

I knew it had to be related to the green rides program! Makes sense that it's a big agency purchase too, no way a bunch of individual people would take on the risk of managing an ocean 😂

This probably explains why I see the Toyota bz4x so much here too

Here's some more municipal EVs and charging stations by the Hudson River trail

(and @volts.wtf, maybe you'd know more about NYC EV policy specifically, but if not... the rideshare bit might be a good podcast episode!)

Bikes aren't the only thing more widespread in New York - I've seen a lot of EV charging, from fleet options for the parks to this gravity charger, and a ton of odd EVs, like a zillion Fisker Oceans.

If someone knows, I'd love an explanation, but my bet is it's the ride-sharing laws around EVs

And here's some NYC bike scenes from today - I love seeing folks just going about their day, but on a bike
A man in a brown jacket and red helmet on a classic blue Citi bike A woman in a brown dress and black belt and long black boots bikes by on a Citi ebike while a man making deliveries waits at a light A man in blue jeans and a green camo jacket with a blue milk crate on the back of his bike rolling through a bike lane while another deliverista rolls past, and some folks walk past on the left

In New York City there's a few different ways to get around, but some of them are a lot more convenient than others

(also I LOVE how many people bike around New York City. It feels like you're always biking with other people 🥺)

It's so funny I'm not even mad

I love biking in New York, I say, then immediately got screamed at for not running a light.

"What are you guys waiting for, Santa Claus?! HE'S NOT COMING!"

New York does have some very pretty buildings

Glad to know CPD isn't the only one that loves parking illegally, NYPD might do it even more 🫠

I love cities, I just saw two girls run into each other in the tripod aisle of the NYC B&H photo store 🥺

Outdoor stools? 🤷‍♂️

Also New York City though - a (half) surface parking lot in some of the most expensive real estate in the country. If only there was a place to put more housing...

Man, New York City. One of very few places in the country where you can be lazy and not want to walk further than 10 minutes from your hotel, but still be spoiled for choice.

I brought it up because I heard the opposite, that a lot of the buttons downtown don't actually change timing. But definitely wish that it's just for announcements and it's clearly marked!
viktorkoves.com
I'm contrasting to these in Minneapolis, which do the same thing but look like they impact signal timing
A button on a pole by an intersection with a multi step sign that says Push button to cross at the bottom and instructions to watch for vehicles and not to start crossing if a red hand is flashing
viktorkoves.com
I think it's more the opposite, it's expected if you're blind you would use the button (and it'll announce) it's to prevent folks thinking they need to press the button to activate the signal

And I'm sure folks know, but holy hell does New York have big bike share docks (CC @davidpowe.bsky.social, but I'm sure you've seen them)

First thing I see in New York has me thinking about similar buttons that confused me in Minneapolis and Chicago - this one's great! (CC @alexschief.bsky.social and @lauragmitchell.com )

Now this is cool - I've seen a lot more solar and wind going into New York than I remember in years passed, and in Croton-on-Hudson they have a massive system : a “4 MW-dc solar system paired with 3.75 MW / 15 MWh battery storage”

Forget the speaker on the laptop! Devices auto connect to Bluetooth outputs they remember, and for some reason there's not a setting to turn it off

We've got an hour break in Albany, a good chance to stretch your legs, grab a sandwich or an iced tea, and soak in the 80° sun
